Traditional Chinese medicine treatment of pulmonary tuberculosis focuses on holistic diagnosis and treatment, and adopts treatment methods that are suitable for the different physical conditions of patients and different stages of the disease. Currently, it is mostly combined with anti-tuberculosis Western medicine in clinical treatment, which can achieve the result of taking into account both the symptoms and the root cause and restoring health.

Traditional Chinese medicine has a long history of understanding tuberculosis, and its knowledge has gradually deepened. There is no mention of tuberculosis in medical books such as "The Yellow Emperor's Classic of Internal Medicine", "Nanjing" and "Golden Chamber". Most of them are classified as "deficiency" and "consumption", and describe clinical manifestations similar to the main symptoms of tuberculosis. For example, the "Lingshu·Yuban" chapter says: "Cough, loss of shape; fever, weak and rapid pulse". The Jin Dynasty's "Emergency Prescriptions for the Elbow" further recognized that the disease was contagious, pointing out that "after death, it can be transmitted to other people, and even the entire family may be wiped out", and coined the names "corpse injection" and "ghost injection". The Tang Dynasty's "Prescriptions for Emergencies Worth a Thousand Gold Pieces" included "corpse injection" in the chapter on lung diseases, making it clear that the disease is located in the lungs, and pointing out that the cause of the disease is "fatigue and heat causing worms in the lungs." Wai Tai Mi Yao observes the clinical manifestations of this disease in great detail, pointing out that the disease has symptoms such as bone steaming, irritability, loss of appetite, weight loss, night sweats, cough, and rouge-colored cheeks. It also points out that the disease may be accompanied by "a lump in the abdomen, or small nodules on both sides of the lower back of the brain" and other concomitant symptoms. Due to the infectiousness and many symptoms of this disease, it has many names, such as corpse disease, fatigue disease, insect disease, corpse disease, pulmonary tuberculosis, fatigue cough, bone steaming, hidden link, acute tuberculosis, etc. It was not until the Song Dynasty that the "Three Causes and One Disease Formula Theory" was used to name it "tuberculosis", and pointed out that "worrying about things will cause 'lung disease'" as "each is a category, which must be known", thus defining tuberculosis from the perspective of pathogenesis. In terms of etiology, the theories of "tuberculosis worms" and "tubercule worms" were established based on the Tang Dynasty's theory of lung worms; in terms of treatment, "Renzai Zhizhi Fang" has put forward the important view of "treating tuberculosis and killing tuberculosis worms". The "Ten Medicines Divine Book" written by Ge Kejiu of the Yuan Dynasty is the first existing monograph on the treatment of tuberculosis in my country. "Dan Xi's Heart Method - Tuberculosis" advocates the theory that "tuberculosis is mainly caused by Yin deficiency", highlights the pathological focus, and establishes the treatment method of nourishing Yin and reducing fire. The Ming Dynasty's "Introduction to Medicine: Tuberculosis" points out that "tidal fever, sweating, coughing, blood, or spermatorrhea, turbid stools, or diarrhea. In mild cases, the six symptoms occur alternately, and in severe cases, the six symptoms occur simultaneously", which summarizes the six main symptoms of this disease. The Medical Biography: Lao Ji established two major treatment principles of killing parasites and tonifying deficiency, which still have important guiding significance for the treatment of tuberculosis.
