Pityriasis Rubra Pilaris

Pityriasis Rubra Pilaris

A person’s life is neither long nor short. People have to experience many things in their lives, and of course there will be many troubles. In fact, people's worries are diverse, because worries can come from many aspects, such as: study, life, work, family, family members, etc. Of course, people's worries often come from physical illnesses, because people may get many diseases in their lives, and they will feel very upset every time they are sick.

There are many kinds of diseases that the human body can suffer from. Some can be cured, while others cannot. Regardless of whether the disease can be cured or not, people feel very depressed and have many worries and concerns. Here is a disease that bothers people: pityriasis rubra pilaris.

Erythroderma pilaris refers to a rare chronic scaly inflammatory skin disease characterized by yellow-red scaly plaques and keratotic follicular papules. First reported by Devergie in 1857. This disease is also known as pityriasis pilaris and lichen acuminatum. The clinical features of the rash are small follicular keratotic papules and scattered brown-red patches or plaques that fuse into scaly, symmetrically distributed patches.

The cause of this disease is still unclear. It may be related to genetic factors, vitamin deficiency, keratinization disorders, endocrine dysfunction, liver disease, infection, etc.

The patient first develops thick gray-white bran-like scales on the scalp, followed by yellow-red dry, thin scales on the face, similar to dry seborrheic dermatitis, which can then spread throughout the body. The clinical features of the rash are small follicular keratotic papules and scattered brown-red patches or plaques that fuse into scaly, symmetrically distributed patches. 77% to 97% of patients have hyperkeratosis of the palms and toes. When the rash is severe, it can spread all over the body and develop into dry scaly erythroderma. The clinical types are: typical adult type, atypical adult type, typical juvenile type, atypical juvenile type, juvenile localized type and pityriasis rubra pilaris associated with HIV infection.

There are several medical treatments for pityriasis rubra pilaris:

1. For patients with localized involvement of the disease, conservative treatment and symptomatic treatment can be adopted.

2. Patients with extensive skin lesions, chronic course, and recurrent disease should be actively treated: oral retinoic acid drugs, vitamin A, and vitamin E can be used for treatment.

3. Patients with secondary erythroderma can be treated with oral corticosteroids and immunosuppressants. Local treatment can be with lubricants, calcipotriol, glucocorticoid preparations and other drugs. In addition, PUVA and Chinese herbal medicine can also be used.

To be honest, I believe that many people have never heard of pityriasis rubra pilaris in life. In fact, this is not surprising, because there are very few people suffering from this disease in daily life. However, due to the uncertainty of the cause of the disease, this disease becomes so difficult to treat. Therefore, if any friend accidentally gets this disease, he must be hospitalized for observation and treatment in time to avoid any sudden situation.
