The efficacy and function of water pinellia

What are the effects and functions of water pinellia? Let us first understand what water pinellia is. Water pinellia is a traditional Chinese medicine. We generally call water pinellia pinellia or wild pinellia or wild notoginseng, etc. Water pinellia has excellent medicinal properties and can treat many diseases. The main effect of water pinellia is to relieve cough and reduce phlegm. Therefore, we can seek help from water pinellia for many lung diseases. Let’s take a look at the specific effects and functions of water pinellia below.

The effects and functions of Water Pinellia are quite comprehensive. First of all, Water Pinellia can have an antiemetic effect. Secondly, Water Pinellia has an antitussive effect. Patients with cough can seek help from Water Pinellia. Water Pinellia also has the benefit of expectorant. In addition, Water Pinellia also has an anti-arrhythmic effect. Water Pinellia can protect our central nervous system, so the medicinal properties of Water Pinellia are very powerful.

Water Pinellia, also known as Earth Pinellia, Pinellia, Panax notoginseng, Mad Dog Potato, etc., is the tuber of Typhonium flagelliforme (Lodd.) Blume, a plant of the Araceae family. Dig up the tubers in autumn and winter, remove the skin and fibrous roots, wash them, and dry them in the sun. It is warm in nature and spicy in taste; it is poisonous and is mainly used to dry dampness, resolve phlegm and relieve cough. Used for cough with excessive sputum, bronchitis; fresh product can be used externally to treat carbuncles, furunculosis, swellings and poisonous insect bites.

1. Antiemetic effect: Oral administration of 50g/kg decoction of raw water pinellia can significantly reduce the number of vomiting induced by copper sulfate stimulation in pigeons, with a reduction rate of 50%; but it cannot reduce the number of vomiting. Its antiemetic effect and intensity are similar to those of Pinellia ternata. The effect of processed products was weaker. The vomiting reduction rates of decoctions made by the old method and the new method (direct soaking in saturated alum water) were 28.7% and 11.8%, respectively.

2. Antitussive effect: 25% suspension of raw Pinellia ternata and its preparations made by the old and new methods was administered to mice at a dose of 10g/kg, which had a significant antitussive effect on cough caused by concentrated ammonia water. The antitussive rate of the preparation made by the new method was 44.8%, while that of the raw product and the preparations made by the old method were 25.5% and 20.4%, respectively.

3. Expectorant effect: The phenol red method was used to determine the effect in mice. The alcohol extracts of the raw product of Pinellia ternata, the new product and the old product were administered orally at a rate of 300 g/kg. Both the new product and the old product had a certain expectorant effect, with the intensity of the effect being 225% and 173% of that of the control group, respectively. However, no obvious expectorant effect was observed with the raw product. The expectorant effect of water pinellia is slightly stronger than that of pinellia.

4. Antiarrhythmic effect: When rats were gavaged with 53g/kg of water-based Pinellia ternata decoction, it had an antagonistic effect on ventricular arrhythmias induced by barium chloride. The duration of ventricular premature beats changed from 81.54±15.73min in the distilled water group to 24.87±5.73min. Its effect intensity was not significantly different from that of Pinellia ternata.

5. Central nervous system inhibitory effect: Intraperitoneal injection of 60g/kg of water pinellia decoction had a significant inhibitory effect on the spontaneous activity of mice; while the effect of the 30g/kg dose group was not obvious. There was a tendency to slightly increase the sleep time and anti-electroconvulsive effect of sodium pentobarbital at high doses, but the difference was not statistically significant. Its central nervous system inhibitory effect is weaker than that of Pinellia ternata.

6. Inhibitory effect on saliva secretion: Oral administration of 60g/kg of water-pinellia decoction to rabbits can inhibit the saliva secretion caused by piloscarpine, and can also reduce tearing and miosis. It is speculated that it may have an effect similar to atropine, which may be related to its "drying dampness" effect, and can also explain the clinical manifestation of dry mouth after taking it.

7. Other effects: The alcohol extract of Pinellia ternata has an antioxidant effect, and the inhibition rate of linoleic acid auto-oxidation IR (%) is 94.1%. IR is proportional to the antioxidant performance. Emetic and laxative effects. The suspension of raw water pinellia has an emetic effect when administered intragastricly to pigeons, and the emetic median effective dose is 1.22g/kg. When the crude drug decoction was taken at a dose of 100 g/kg, 60% of the pigeons experienced a purgative effect. No obvious emetic effect was observed in the new and old preparations.

8. Toxicity: Raw water pinellia has a stimulating effect. When 40% suspension was dropped into the eyes of rabbits, the positive rate of irritation to the eyelid conjunctiva reached 100%, and even edema occurred. Its intensity is less than that of pinellia. The irritating effect of alum products was significantly reduced, and the positive rates of new and old products with the same concentration were 10% and 0%, respectively. Raw water pinellia also has emetic and laxative effects. Mice were given a single oral gavage of 10 g/kg of the raw, new and old product suspensions, and mice were given a single oral gavage of 120 g/kg of the raw product decoction. All survived after 5 days of observation. After intraperitoneal injection of 80 g/kg of water pinellia, the mice were observed for 72 hours and showed symptoms of poisoning such as hyporesponsiveness, muscle relaxation, and slow breathing, but no death was observed. Water decoction of alum products can reduce its toxicity.

Above we introduced a kind of Chinese medicine, Water Pinellia. Water Pinellia should be distinguished from Pinellia. The effects and functions of Water Pinellia are very comprehensive. Water Pinellia can treat many diseases. Water Pinellia can relieve cough and reduce phlegm, treat saliva secretion, and have an antioxidant effect. Therefore, we must be good at making good use of the effects and functions of Water Pinellia in our lives.
