Side Effects of Peppermint

Side Effects of Peppermint

I believe everyone knows mint. Mint can be eaten and used as medicine. We can use mint to make many foods. We can use mint to make mint porridge to increase our appetite. We can use mint to make mint tofu to treat nasal congestion. We can use mint to make mint cake to have the benefit of cooling down and it is also good for our throat.

Mint is a common Chinese medicine. We all know that all medicines are poisonous, so while we enjoy the benefits and effects of mint, we have to admit that mint still has certain side effects.

Mint has both medicinal and edible functions. The main edible parts are the stems and leaves, and it can also be taken as juice. In terms of food, mint can be used as a seasoning, a spice, and can also be paired with wine, tea, etc. Every 100 grams of dried mint contains 9.6 grams of water, 6.8 grams of protein and 31.1 grams of fiber, and can provide 870.7 kilojoules of calories.

Mint is a commonly used Chinese medicine. The young and tender stem tips can be used as food, and the whole plant can be used as medicine to treat colds, fever, sore throat, headache, red and painful eyes, muscle pain, itchy skin rashes, and measles. It is also effective for carbuncles, ulcers, scabies, ringworm, and lacquer sores. Mint contains menthol, which freshens breath and has a variety of medicinal properties. It can relieve abdominal pain and gallbladder problems such as cramps. It also has antiseptic and antibacterial effects, diuretic, expectorant, stomachic and digestive effects. Large amounts of peppermint can cause insomnia, but small doses can help you sleep.

Peppermint contains 1-3% volatile oil, of which menthol (menthol) is about 80%, followed by menthone, isomenthol, pinene, etc. It has a stimulating effect on the digestive tract and an inhibitory effect on the medullary center and the heart. Taking 20 ml of menthol can cause severe poisoning. Poisoning is often caused by overdose.

Symptoms of poisoning: Usually occur 10 minutes to several hours after eating. Symptoms include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, dizziness, numbness of hands and feet, unsteady gait, drowsiness, coma, etc. Some patients may experience laryngeal spasm, slow breathing, increased respiratory secretions, and decreased blood pressure. Allergic skin changes may occur.

Above we introduced the effects and functions of mint. Mint is a traditional Chinese medicine that is both a medicine and a food. As a type of traditional Chinese medicine, mint has very high medicinal value. Mint has bactericidal, expectorant, and diuretic effects. At the same time, we also introduced the side effects of mint, so we must use mint dialectically.
