Spleen and stomach deficiency and cold refers to symptoms caused by weak spleen and stomach yang qi and dysfunction of absorption and transport. This can be seen in patients with many chronic diseases, especially chronic gastrointestinal diseases, after a long period of illness. Common symptoms include cold pain and fullness in the upper and middle abdomen, dull pain that is continuous, pain that is relieved by pressure or warm compress, pain that is aggravated by fatigue, loose and unformed stools, and in severe cases, cold limbs. It usually occurs after spleen and stomach weakness further worsens, or occurs together with spleen and stomach weakness. Although both may manifest as fear of cold and stomach pain, the "cold" in traditional Chinese medicine is divided into internal cold and external cold. Internal cold is a cold caused by insufficient Yang energy in the body due to weakness of the spleen and stomach to a certain extent, and is a deficiency syndrome. External cold is a cold caused by excessive coldness from the outside world invading the body, and is an excess syndrome. The cold referred to here is internal cold, which is caused by the deficiency of Yang Qi and its inability to warm and nourish, and is not caused by the cold evil.

How to relieve spleen and stomach coldness

Spleen deficiency is a term in Chinese medicine. It refers to a series of pathological phenomena and symptoms of spleen physiological dysfunction caused by spleen deficiency. It includes syndromes such as spleen qi deficiency, spleen yang deficiency, sinking of middle qi, and spleen failure to regulate blood. Mostly due to eating disorders. It is caused by improper balance between work and rest, or long-term illness and physical weakness. The spleen has the functions of transporting and transforming nutrients in food, distributing fluids, and controlling blood. Spleen deficiency will lead to abnormal transportation and transformation, nutritional disorders, failure of water distribution to produce dampness and phlegm, or blood loss.

If the spleen is not harmonious, no appetite and indigestion, use Zhisuo Erchen Decoction and Zhishu Pills; if the stomach is not harmonious, use Pingwei Powder."

There are many symptoms of damp-heat in the spleen and stomach. Epigastric pain, noisy and burning sensation, dry mouth without desire to drink, hunger without desire to eat, yellow urine and difficult bowel movements are the key points in diagnosing damp-heat in the spleen and stomach. The treatment of this disease should be based on the principle of clearing away heat without hindering the removal of dampness, and removing dampness without adding heat. Sanren Decoction should be used with modifications, and wax gourd peel and Artemisia capillaris should be added to remove dampness, clear heat, and harmonize the spleen and stomach. For diarrhea caused by damp-heat, Ge Gen Qin Lian Tang is often used with modifications. If jaundice occurs, Yinchen Wuling San can be used with modifications.

The stomachache is dull and continuous, with cold pain and discomfort, prefers warm ointment and pressure, is worse on an empty stomach and relieved by food, the pain occurs or worsens after fatigue or eating cold food or catching a cold, the patient vomits clear water, eats less, feels tired and weak, has cold hands and feet, has loose and thin stools, has a pale tongue with white coating, and has a weak pulse.

Symptoms of spleen yang deficiency and internal excess of yin and cold. Also known as spleen yang deficiency and cold syndrome. It is mostly caused by spleen deficiency, excessive consumption of raw and cold food, or kidney yang deficiency, which causes fire to fail to generate earth. Clinical manifestations include abdominal distension and poor appetite, which is relieved when the abdomen is full, abdominal pain that is relieved by warmth and pressure, clear water in the mouth, loose and thin stools, cold limbs, or heaviness of limbs, or general edema, difficulty urinating, or excessive and watery leucorrhea, a sinking lower abdomen, and soreness and heaviness in the waist and abdomen. The tongue is pale and fat, the tongue coating is white and slippery, and the pulse is deep, slow and weak. The key points of diagnosis for spleen and stomach deficiency and coldness syndrome are spleen dysfunction and cold symptoms. If the spleen yang is insufficient and the transportation and transformation functions are impaired, there will be abdominal distension and poor appetite. When Yang is deficient and Yin is excessive, coldness arises from within, and the coldness stagnates the Qi, so abdominal pain is relieved by warmth and pressure; when Yin and cold Qi are excessive inside, water and dampness cannot be transformed, so clear water overflows from the mouth, stools are loose, and even food cannot be digested, urination is difficult, and there is edema. Women with clear and watery vaginal discharge and a sore and heavy feeling in the waist and abdomen are experiencing the invasion of cold and dampness.
