What are the symptoms of periodic paralysis? How to recuperate?

Periodic paralysis is a periodic onset of muscular flaccid paralysis related to potassium metabolism. The cause of the disease is not yet fully understood. It is often triggered by factors such as strenuous exercise, overeating, cold, and anxiety. So how should periodic paralysis be treated?

(I) Daily life regimen

Since periodic paralysis can be triggered by strenuous exercise, overeating or hunger, cold, anxiety and other factors, patients should pay special attention to the regulation of daily life, have a regular living schedule, ensure adequate sleep, eat in moderation, and avoid overeating. At the same time, you should pay attention to weather changes and add clothes at any time to avoid illness caused by cold. Usually, try to avoid strenuous activities and keep your mood happy.

(II) Dietary conditioning

Daily diet should be regular and rhythmic. Hunger or overeating can induce periodic paralysis. People with hypokalemic paralysis should eat foods high in potassium, such as meat, milk, cereals, beans, vegetables, fruits, etc. Patients with frequent hyperkalemic paralysis can be given a high-carbohydrate diet to reduce attacks and eat less high-potassium foods on a regular basis. Some patients with normokalemic paralysis are usually fond of salt. Once they reduce their salt intake or eat more potassium salt, it may induce or worsen the symptoms. Therefore, the intake of sodium and potassium salts should be properly controlled.

In addition to mushrooms and lotus seeds, foods rich in potassium include magnolia slices, curry powder, soybeans, green beans, black beans, mung beans, cowpeas, broad beans, peas, shiitake mushrooms, kelp, seaweed, peanuts, scallops, dried shrimps, etc. Patients with low potassium periodic paralysis can choose curry beef soup, seaweed and shrimp soup, mushroom tofu soup, etc., while patients with high potassium periodic paralysis should eat less of the above foods.

Avoid drinking strong alcohol and eating high-sugar foods.

The following dietary treatments are available:

(1) Pork belly with lotus seeds: 1 pork belly, 40 lotus seeds (core removed), a little sesame oil, salt, green onion, ginger and garlic. Put the soaked lotus seeds into the cleaned pig stomach, sew it up with thread, put it into a box, put the box into the pot and stew it, then take it out and let it cool. Cut the pork tripe into thin strips and put it into a plate together with the lotus seeds. Add sesame oil, salt, onion, ginger and garlic, mix well and eat. Lotus seeds are potassium-rich foods and are suitable for hypokalemic periodic paralysis.

(2) Add 1.5 bowls of water to 60 grams of Sichuan peppercorns and boil until half a bowl of water remains. Cover with a cloth and place outside in a high place. Take it out the next morning, drink it cold, and sweat under a blanket. The symptoms will be relieved.

(3) 500 grams of eel, appropriate amount of rice wine, cut the eel into strips and stir-fry, add rice wine, green onion, ginger, and salt, and serve as a side dish.

(4) Boil 60 grams of ginger and 100 milliliters of aged vinegar in water and use it to wash the affected area.
