The efficacy and function of Smilax glabra

Detoxify, remove dampness, and benefit joints.

Indications: Treat syphilis, stranguria, muscle and bone spasms, beriberi, furuncle, carbuncle, scrofula, limb spasms and muscle and bone pain caused by syphilis and mercury poisoning.

Usage and dosage of Smilax glabra

For internal use: decoction, 25-50g. For external use: grind into powder and apply on skin.

Taboos of Tu Fuling

Patients with liver and kidney yin deficiency should take with caution. According to a report from Henan Hebi City Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital, a case of skin disease caused by allergic reaction after taking Chinese medicine containing Smilax glabra, with itchy skin all over the body and scattered erythematous papules of different sizes. No allergic symptoms occurred after removing the wild yam from the original formula, but if the wild yam was added back, the allergic symptoms reappeared.

Selection of Chinese yam

1. To treat myrica rubra: boil one liang or five qian of wild yam in water or wine. (Compendium of Materia Medica in Southern Yunnan)

2. To treat rheumatism that lasts for ten to twenty years, and swelling and pain in the tendons and bones caused by blisters: 3 jin of wild yam, 2 qian of Sichuan pepper, 3 qian of licorice, 1 jin of black lead, and 3 qian of green ivy. 3. To treat hematuria: 50 cents each of Chinese yam and tea root. Decoction in water with white sugar as a guide. (Jiangxi Herbal Medicine)

4. Treat rheumatic bone pain, sores and swelling: peel one pound of wild yam, stew it with pork, and take it with the residue in several times. (Commonly used herbal medicines among Zhejiang folks)

5. To treat pain caused by wind and wind poison sores and tinea: 8 liang of wild yam (not suitable for iron containers). Pound it into fine powder in a stone mortar, add one dou of glutinous rice, steam it, and add white wine to make pure liquor. Both the liquor and the dregs are edible. 7. To treat scrofula ulcers: cut cold rice balls into slices or grind them into powder, and decoct them in water. Or you can add it to porridge and eat it. It is best to eat more. Avoid iron objects and irritating foods. (Jidetang Experience Prescription)

8. Treat dermatitis: 2 to 3 liang of wild yam. Boil in water and drink as tea. (Jiangxi Herbal Medicine)

9. To treat women's menorrhagia and leucorrhea: stew Chinese yam in water and add brown sugar to treat menorrhagia and white sugar to treat leucorrhea. (Compendium of Materia Medica in Southern Yunnan)

10. To treat infantile malnutrition with sallow complexion, thin body, big belly, irritability and crying, silent crying, loss of appetite, irregular bowel movements, and rough skin: 3 grams of wild yam and 3 grams of wild cotton root. 11. To treat goiter: 50 cents of wild yam, 30 cents each of golden lock and silver lily and Dioscorea bulbifera, 50 cents of white hairy vine, 40 cents each of blackberry root and dandelion, 20 cents each of licorice and honeysuckle, decocted and taken orally.
