What causes hemifacial spasm? This factor is the most common

Hemifacial spasm is not uncommon in our lives, and most of the factors that cause this disease are pathological factors. In addition, certain surgical operations may also induce the occurrence of hemifacial spasm.

1. The occurrence of hemifacial spasm is caused by some kind of compression that causes pathological interference in the conduction of the facial nerve. Most patients with hemifacial spasm suffer from cross compression of normal blood vessels, such as compression of the anterior inferior cerebellar artery, vertebral nerve artery, posterior inferior cerebellar artery, arteriovenous malformation, etc.

2. Some patients with hemifacial spasm suffer from idiopathic facial nerve paralysis, and after recovery, they will have secondary hemifacial spasm on the affected side. It may be a pathological change of nerve demyelination caused by facial neuritis and has not returned to normal. There is partial myelin loss, which makes the electrical conduction of the facial nerve easily affected, or because facial neuritis involves the nerve nuclei in the brainstem, causing epilepsy-like symptoms and paroxysmal twitching of facial muscles, thus triggering the occurrence of hemifacial spasm.

3. Occasionally, it may be caused by cachectic lesions such as brain tumors and aneurysms compressing the roots of the facial nerve.

4. A very small number of patients with hemifacial spasm suffer from hemifacial spasm on the affected side after surgery or traumatic tumor. There may be a short circuit between the facial nerve and other cranial nerves during the recovery process. When other cranial nerves are excited, facial muscles on one side may twitch.

5. Secondary hemifacial spasm refers to those with a clear inducing disease, such as peripheral facial paralysis caused by facial nerve trauma or facial neuritis, which can cause joint movement of the facial muscles during the recovery period, with characteristics similar to hemifacial spasm; certain tumors or inflammation of the cerebellopontine angle involving the facial nerve root can also cause the occurrence of this disease.
