What to do if perianal abscess recurs? How to improve

Perianal abscess is a symptom caused by infection in the soft tissue or surrounding space around the anal canal and rectum. It is mostly due to anal fissure or dry and hard stool that damages the anal canal and rectum during defecation. If intestinal bacteria penetrate into the injured area, infection will form and cause the occurrence of abscess. For perianal abscess, many patients always have recurring symptoms after treatment. What should we do when we encounter this situation?

01

Perianal abscess is very painful. Not only will defecation be painful, but if the abscess is located deep, systemic symptoms such as fever and fatigue may occur. It generally cannot heal on its own, and in severe cases, anal fistula may form. If the pus is drained, the symptoms may be temporarily relieved, and then the ulcer may heal. However, pus continues to accumulate, and the infection continues to spread to the surrounding area, causing symptoms to reappear, and new abscesses may appear, forming multiple ulcers, which will cause repeated attacks and have a great impact on the patient.

02

Therefore, perianal abscesses must be treated promptly and appropriate methods must be selected for treatment. Generally, if the patient has a superficial perianal abscess, it can be dissipated by antibiotics, hot water sitz baths, local physical therapy, etc. However, most patients, especially those with recurrent episodes, generally require surgical incision of the abscess to fully drain the pus and prevent its continued spread in order to relieve pain and other symptoms.

03

Patients with recurrent disease often have anal fistula, so if you want to cure it and avoid recurrence, you must treat the anal fistula first. It is recommended to use potassium permanganate solution for local sitz bath to keep the perineum clean. At the same time, antibiotics are used to control infection. About 3 months after the abscess ruptures or incision and drainage, the inflammation around the anal fistula will subside, a fibrous duct will be formed, and then surgery can be performed to treat the anal fistula.
