What should I do if the elderly keeps having diarrhea?

As the elderly get older, their gastrointestinal health is not very good, so they often have problems with diarrhea. At this time, they can choose to take Shuanghuanglian tablets according to the needs of the disease, or use other medications for treatment. Some of them are fungal infections and require examination in the hospital to know the truth.

Berberine tablets: weak effect but good safety

Berberine tablets are one of the first batch of 165 over-the-counter Chinese patent medicines officially announced by the country not long ago. It is a tablet made from a bioalkali extracted from the traditional Chinese medicines Coptis chinensis, Phellodendron amurense or Tripterygium wilfordii. Although it has only a weak inhibitory effect on bacteria, its advantages are good safety, few adverse reactions, and a very cheap price. It is most popular among the general public for treating enteritis, and many people even carry it with them when traveling in case of emergency. This is a small, light yellowish-brown tablet that tastes bitter. Each tablet contains 0.1 gram of the main drug. Depending on the condition of the disease, 0.1-0.4 grams (i.e. 1-4 tablets) can be taken each time, 3 times a day. The single dosage for children around 1 year old is 0.05 grams, and the rest can be taken according to the drug instructions.

Sulfonamide: Do not use if you are allergic to it

In the past, sulfaguanidine (also known as sulfaguanidine) was one of the commonly used drugs for treating infectious diarrhea. It has good efficacy, few side effects and is cheap. Unfortunately, this type of tablet is no longer easy to buy nowadays, so co-trimoxazole tablets are more commonly used. It is a tablet composed of sulfamethoxazole and the synergist trimethoprim, and is effective against enteritis and diarrhea caused by Shigella dysenteriae and Escherichia coli. The usual dosage for adults is 2 tablets each time, once every 12 hours. The medication is usually used for 5 days. If symptoms do not improve, the medication should be stopped and a doctor should be consulted. Drink plenty of water while taking the medicine. Use with caution for pregnant women, lactating women, and those with poor renal function. It is forbidden for those with severe renal impairment. It is contraindicated for those with a history of allergy to sulfonamides or those with allergic constitution.
