What causes leg edema?

What causes leg edema?

The occurrence of edema should cause certain vigilance. In addition to standing for too long and wearing inappropriate shoes, most of the reasons are related to disease. The most common one is renal edema. More common ones include acute and chronic nephritis, or pyelonephritis, etc., which may cause such edema. In addition, when heart disease causes right heart failure, it is also easy to cause symptoms of foot edema. There is also hepatic edema and malnutrition-related edema, which may cause foot edema.

What causes leg swelling?

1. Renal edema. In patients with acute nephritis, chronic nephritis or kidney disease, due to reduced renal blood flow, sodium and water retention, increased capillary permeability, and excessive protein loss in the urine, the plasma colloidal osmotic pressure will be reduced, causing fluid accumulation in the tissue spaces and causing edema.

2. Cardiogenic edema. When right heart failure occurs in various heart diseases, venous blood cannot return smoothly, causing increased pressure in the veins, and body fluids leak into the tissue spaces, causing edema.

3. Hepatic edema. Factors such as liver damage in cirrhosis, obstruction of portal vein return, increased portal vein pressure, and low plasma albumin in liver failure can cause edema.

4. Malnutrition edema.

5. Localized lower limb edema. It is mostly caused by obstruction of the veins and lymphatic vessels in the lower limbs, resulting in the entry of body fluids into the tissue spaces. It may be caused by thrombophlebitis of the lower limbs, lymphangitis, filariasis, or compression of the veins by pelvic or lower limb tumors.

6. Idiopathic edema is more common in women. The cause is unknown and may be related to hormone metabolism in the body. It can be seen that there are many reasons for leg swelling. It can be a symptom of systemic disease or one of the symptoms of local lower limb disease. Therefore, you must go to the hospital for a comprehensive examination to find out the cause before you can carry out reasonable treatment.

The dangers of leg swelling

Although varicose veins in the lower legs are mostly vascular diseases, many patients do not have relevant knowledge about the disease. Do not be careless when swelling occurs in the lower legs! This disease prefers women, and most of the women who get it are of childbearing age, between 20 and 50 years old.

Varicose veins in the lower legs generally have few symptoms because they are chronic diseases of the venous return vessels. However, as the valves are damaged more and more, the degree of varicose veins becomes more and more severe, and some symptoms may occur, such as soreness, heaviness in the legs, inability to walk far and other mild fatigue symptoms. There is also the possibility of slow blood return, causing local thrombosis and leading to acute development.

What to do with swollen calves

1. Massage promotes blood circulation and relieves varicose veins and edema;

2. Soak your feet: before going to bed at night, completely immerse your feet in hot water, pat your legs with water, and add salt to the hot water for better results;

3. Eating more peanuts, almonds, cashews, walnuts and other nuts are very effective in restoring physical fitness.

In addition, seafood soup, green pepper, sesame, strawberry, etc. are rich in protein, which can protect the function of the liver. You can also eat more of them to relieve fatigue. Also, you can press the swollen area with your hand. If there is a dimple that takes a while to recover, then you have edema, which may be caused by excessive drinking, excessive fatigue and insomnia. The solution is to eat more fruits and vegetables that excrete excess water, such as tomatoes, watermelons, apples, winter melon, spinach, etc.
