Can taking laxatives help you lose weight?

Can taking laxatives help you lose weight?

Laxatives are a common therapeutic drug. For patients who often suffer from constipation, taking laxatives can achieve obvious therapeutic effects. Laxatives can also help with weight loss. However, taking laxatives may cause relatively large side effects. Therefore, if you want to lose weight by taking antidotes, you must be cautious. It will cause adverse stimulation to the stomach and intestines, and may even cause drug dependence, which is relatively harmful to the health of the body.

Can taking laxatives help you lose weight?

cannot! General laxatives will only cause dehydration, which is just forcible removal of water from the human body, and has no actual weight loss effect. Principle: Laxatives or weight-loss agents containing laxatives excrete water from the spaces between cells and tissues. After the water is excreted, the volume of cells shrinks, the tissue spaces become narrower, and weight will decrease. However, the excess body fat is not reduced much. Once the laxatives are stopped, the water produced by the body's metabolism will quickly refill the cells and tissue spaces, causing the weight to be quickly restored.

The dangers of taking laxatives

1. The working principle of laxatives that strongly stimulate the gastrointestinal tract is to strongly stimulate the peristalsis and contraction of the intestinal wall. However, since they cannot participate in the formation of feces and cannot improve the dry and hard properties of feces, users often experience the pain of "tenesmus" and may even cause symptoms such as hemorrhoid rupture and rectal prolapse. 2. Drug-dependent patients who take laxatives that stimulate intestinal peristalsis (stimulant laxatives) will develop serious drug dependence. The dosage of the drugs will increase, and even damage the peripheral nerves and muscle tissues of the intestinal wall, and develop functional lesions into difficult-to-treat organic constipation (intractable constipation).

3. Melanosis coli Stimulant laxatives (such as rhubarb, senna, cascara, etc.) contain a compound called "anthraquinone". Long-term use of laxatives containing this compound can lead to the deposition of a large amount of pigment in the intestinal mucosa, turning the intestinal surface black, which is called melanosis coli. Be aware that melanosis coli increases the risk of colon cancer. 4. Diarrhea and dehydration: Rhubarb, Cassia seed, senna leaves, aloe vera, oleanolic acid and other ingredients have a strong stimulating effect on the intestines, which destroys the intestinal ecological environment, disturbs the balance of beneficial bacteria such as bifidobacteria, changes the normal pH value in the intestinal cavity, and causes a large amount of water secreted by the intestines to be lost. Patients experience diarrhea symptoms, and severe cases (especially the elderly) may lead to dehydration symptoms. Solution: It’s okay if you don’t have more than 10 bowel movements. The antidote for laxatives is usually cold water. Drinking a few sips of cold water can stop the problem. If you have more than 15 bowel movements, you need to go to the hospital for infusion to prevent the risk of dehydration.
