What is the disease of bulging veins on the feet

The appearance of venous bulges on the feet is often caused by varicose veins of the superficial lower limbs, such as the great saphenous vein or the small saphenous vein. Most of the time, it is caused by the great saphenous vein. Varicose veins of the great saphenous vein will manifest as elongation and expansion of the superficial veins. People who often stand for long periods of time or engage in physical labor are the main groups prone to the disease. This disease also has a certain degree of heredity.

The cause of the disease is mostly due to incomplete closure of the first pair of valves in the superficial veins (femoral saphenous vein valves), which leads to reflux of blood in the superficial veins and increases the venous pressure in the lower limbs. Secondly, congenital weakness of the venous wall is also an important reason. Patients often have systemic or localized venous wall defects. When the venous pressure increases, the veins become tortuous and dilated. Finally, factors such as long-term standing, obesity, and abdominal pressure can increase the likelihood of varicose veins developing because they can increase venous pressure.

Clinical manifestations: In the early stage of the disease, symptoms include soreness, swelling, discomfort and dull pain in the lower limbs, as well as a feeling of heaviness and fatigue. The above feelings often worsen after standing for a long time and can be relieved by lying down or raising the limbs. In the middle and late stages of the disease, the venous wall is damaged, the veins bulge, dilate, and become tortuous, taking on an earthworm-like appearance, which is most obvious in the course of the great saphenous vein on the inner side of the calf. If the disease lasts for a long time, nutritional changes will occur in the skin of the limbs, such as desquamation, itching, pigmentation, and even eczema and ulcers. As the disease progresses, symptoms such as vascular pain, lower limb swelling, congestive dermatitis, and superficial vein thrombosis may occur.

Prevention 1. This disease has a genetic tendency and usually occurs around the age of 30. Therefore, children and adolescents should exercise regularly to strengthen their physical fitness, which will help prevent and treat it. 2. Obese people should lose weight. Although obesity is not the direct cause, excessive weight on the legs may cause poor venous return in the legs and aggravate venous dilation. 3. People who engage in heavy physical labor or stand for long periods of time are best to wear elastic stockings. 4. Women should pay special attention to their legs during special periods such as menstruation and pregnancy. They should get more rest and massage their legs frequently to help blood circulation and avoid varicose veins. 5. Quit smoking, because smoking can change blood viscosity, making the blood thicker and more prone to congestion. Oral contraceptives have similar effects and should be taken as little as possible. 6. Raise your legs and wear elastic stockings: Raise your legs to change your body position and help venous blood return. Choose compression stockings with higher elasticity (medical grade). Before getting out of bed every day, lift your legs and slowly put them on. The pressure of elastic stockings can improve and prevent varicose veins in the lower limbs. 7. Insist on walking for a certain period of time every day. Walking can exert the "muscle pump" effect of the calf muscles and prevent the pressure of blood backflow.
