Although both are plants of the Bupleuraceae family, there is still a big difference between the two. Southern Bupleurum, also known as narrow-leaved Bupleurum and red Bupleurum. The main root of Bupleurum chinense is thick and hard, with a gray-brown or black-brown outer skin and often a few lateral roots. Its stem is clustered or solitary, with many branches in the upper part, slightly curved in a "Z" shape. There are no fibrous petiole remnants at the stem base. The stem leaves of Bupleurum chinense are oblanceolate or narrowly elliptic, the middle leaves are oblanceolate, with 7 to 9 parallel veins and a leaf width of 6 to 16 mm.
