What is Resveratrol

What is Resveratrol

I believe that many people don’t know the main ingredients of resveratrol, and they don’t know its medicinal value, so everyone should learn more about resveratrol. Resveratrol is a polyphenol substance and a drug for treating tumors. It can prevent arteriosclerosis and cardiovascular diseases, and can regulate blood sugar. It is a relatively good drug for treating diabetes. You can learn more about it.

Resveratrol is a polyphenol compound, a natural polyphenol with strong biological properties, also known as resveratrol. It is a chemopreventive agent for tumors, and a chemopreventive agent for the prevention and treatment of atherosclerosis, cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases. It is a natural antioxidant that can reduce blood viscosity, inhibit platelet aggregation and vasodilation, maintain blood flow, prevent the occurrence and development of cancer, and prevent and treat ischemic heart disease and hyperlipidemia. The tumor-suppressing effect also has estrogen-like effects and can be used to treat diseases such as breast cancer.

The specific effects of resveratrol

1. Regulate blood sugar, beneficial for diabetic patients

Diabetes is very common and easy to prevent, but many people do not take it seriously. The problem with diabetes is arteriosclerosis, which increases the risk of myocardial infarction and stroke. If it affects the kidney microvessels, it will further cause renal failure. Therefore, how to control blood sugar is a matter of life and death (in the United States alone, 70,000 people die from diabetes complications each year).

Studies have found that taking 150 mg of resveratrol daily for 30 consecutive days can improve blood sugar levels (down 4.2%) and insulin concentrations (down 13.7%) in overweight people.

For people with diabetes, resveratrol can improve fasting blood sugar, insulin, and glycated hemoglobin. The study also mentioned that the improvements in these blood sugar markers were not found in non-diabetic patients.

2. Resveratrol and weight loss

According to the World Health Organization, there are 2.3 billion overweight people in the world (people over 15 years old) and 700 million people are obese.

The risks of obesity include type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, high blood lipids and increased incidence of various cancers.

A large-scale observational study (follow-up period of 10 years, subjects included 500,000 men and women) found that being overweight increases the mortality rate by 20% to 40%, which is 2 to 3 times that of people with normal weight.

A systematic literature review (Systematic Review, including 7 studies with a total of 208 participants) pointed out that for overweight subjects, oral resveratrol has no significant effect on weight management, reduction of adipose tissue, and abdominal obesity (however, the only positive result is that resveratrol can reduce inflammatory markers (IL-6)).

The researchers believe that weight loss is a gradual process, which still needs further confirmation in the future considering limitations such as small sample size, heterogeneity, and short experimental period (mostly less than 90 days).

3. Reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease

Cardiovascular disease, generally known as heart disease, is mainly caused by insufficient blood flow leading to hypoxia of heart tissue. The reason why cardiovascular disease is so scary is that most of the time there are no symptoms, but once it occurs, the mortality rate is as high as 30%, which is very unprepared.

Among them, coronary heart disease (i.e. angina pectoris and myocardial infarction) is the most common one, which is common in men aged 40 to 60 and mostly occurs in women after the age of 50. It is the main cause of sudden death (accounting for about 70% of the total deaths from heart disease).

In a 6-month study of 34 patients with metabolic syndrome, it was found that taking resveratrol (100 mg daily) improved vascular health indicators: endothelial cell relaxation function, but other blood values did not change compared with the placebo group.

In addition, a double-blind controlled study (sample size 75 people, experimental period of one year) found that taking resveratrol can not only significantly improve a variety of inflammatory factors, including C-reactive protein (CRP) and tumor necrosis factor (TNF-α), but also reduce the factor that causes blood clots: plasminogen activator inhibitor type 1 (PAI-1), which may be used as a golden ingredient for preventing cardiovascular disease.

4. Improves cognitive function (may help with dementia)

Generally, the brain will have more than one aging path. As we enter old age, if our physical and mental conditions are normal, cognitive function usually begins to decline after the age of 80 under normal aging. The other pathway is related to dementia, which is characterized by the destruction of brain cells. Over time, it can easily lead to memory and cognitive impairment, and even inability to take care of oneself.

The most common dementia in the elderly is: The main pathological feature of Alzheimer's disease is the accumulation of beta-amyloid protein outside nerve cells, which causes abnormal cell function and necrosis, and the other is the tangle of nerve fibers formed by excessive aggregation of tau protein.

Animal experiments have found that giving mice resveratrol can not only prolong their average lifespan, but also reduce the aggregation of beta-amyloid protein and tau protein, and has the effect of protecting nerve cells and slowing down cognitive degeneration, but relevant human research has yet to be confirmed.

In a small study (on overweight middle-aged and middle-aged adults aged between 50 and 75), taking resveratrol (200 mg per day for 26 weeks) not only improved blood sugar metabolism and body fat, but also helped improve memory performance (more words heard 30 minutes ago were recalled) and hippocampal connectivity function/an important block for forming long-term memories.
