Characteristics of duodenal pain

Duodenal pain is often caused by some stomach problems, the most common of which is excessive stomach acid, or gastric ulcer and duodenal ulcer, etc. Some chemical inflammation is an important cause of pain, and the essential cause of this type of pain may be related to bacterial infection. The pain is characterized by long-term nature, and most patients have a history of many years. The location of the pain is generally in the center of the upper abdomen, and it will show periodic characteristics.

Characteristics of duodenal pain

(1) History of chronic pain: Patients often have a history of chronic, long-term, and intermittently severe upper abdominal pain. According to clinical statistics, the average history of the disease is 6-7 years, some can be as long as 30-50 years, but there are also cases with only a few days or weeks.

(2) Location of pain: The pain occurs in the center of the upper abdomen, just above the navel or just to the right of the midline.

(3) Periodic attacks: Upper abdominal pain occurs repeatedly and periodically. During an attack, the pain may last for days, weeks, or months, followed by periods of relief.

(4) Rhythmicity of pain: Typical duodenal ulcer pain often occurs 2-3 hours after a meal (pain on an empty stomach) and persists. Until relieved after eating or taking antacids. Some patients may experience pain in the middle of the night (nocturnal pain).

(5) The degree and nature of pain: The degree of pain is generally mild and tolerable. The nature of the pain is often described by patients as dull pain, burning pain, stabbing pain, pain in the throat, or even like hunger.

Causes

Primary duodenitis, the cause is not very clear. Stimulating foods, drugs such as drinking and aspirin, and radiation exposure can all cause this disease. Patients with chronic superficial gastritis and atrophic gastritis often have duodenitis, suggesting that this disease may have the same cause as some chronic gastritis. Secondary duodenitis or specific duodenitis is a group of duodenitis caused by various specific causes, including infection (parasites, tuberculosis, fungi, molds, etc.), cerebrovascular disease and myocardial infarction. Liver, pancreatic and bile duct diseases can also cause this disease due to local compression or spread, which may cause duodenal blood supply obstruction.
