The effect of external application of magnesium sulfate powder

1. Reduce inflammation and leg swelling, etc.

Magnesium sulfate hot compress: It has the effect of reducing inflammation and swelling, and is widely used in the treatment of minor gynecological perineal surgery and perineal edema after menstruation and childbirth. The conventional method is for the patient to lie flat with the knees bent and the legs abducted. Two layers of gauze of appropriate size are soaked in 40℃ 50% magnesium sulfate solution and placed on the edema area. Depending on the degree of edema, wet compresses are applied for 30 minutes, once or twice a day. However, clinical observations have found that the heat from wet gauze will dissipate quickly, especially in winter, which affects the efficacy. In view of this, the author uses a hot water bottle filled with 45℃ warm water, covers it with a cloth, and properly presses it on the gauze for wet hot compress. After 30 minutes, it is removed together with the gauze. This can better maintain the wet hot compress state and make its anti-inflammatory and swelling-reducing effect more obvious. The material is easy to obtain, the operation is simple, and the patient feels comfortable. Note: ① Understand the indications and it is advisable to use it 24 hours after delivery and minor perineal surgery. ②The water temperature of the hot water bottle should not be too high to avoid scalding the perineum.

2. Duodenal drainage 33% 50ml (sterile solution), or 50% local swelling reduction, etc.

External application method of magnesium sulfate solution alone: ​​Patients should apply hot compress with magnesium sulfate solution plus warm water bag within 48 hours and cold compress for 48 hours. The method is to soak gauze or cotton wool in 50% magnesium sulfate solution, then take it out and apply it to the affected area, and place a warm water bag on the gauze or cotton wool. When applying a cold compress, apply magnesium sulfate solution directly to the affected area. The duration of external application is about 15 minutes each time. The number of applications per day can be flexibly controlled according to the size of the nodule and the severity of the inflammatory reaction. The smaller the nodule, the better the treatment effect. Because magnesium sulfate has the pharmacological effects of hypertonicity, detumescence and analgesia, it is used in clinical practice and has achieved relatively satisfactory results.

Effects of magnesium sulfate topical application [Precautions]

(1) Use with caution in patients with impaired renal function, the elderly and children.

(2) Adverse reactions of magnesium sulfate include nausea, abdominal pain, and loss of appetite.

(3) If the magnesium sulfate solution is too concentrated, it can absorb a large amount of water from the tissues and cause dehydration. Therefore, it is advisable to take it on an empty stomach in the early morning and drink plenty of water to accelerate the catharsis effect and prevent dehydration. If the magnesium sulfate solution you take is too concentrated and you do not drink enough water at the same time, your bowel movements will be delayed.

(4) When abdominal distension is induced by defecation, this product should not be used as a laxative to avoid a sudden increase in intestinal contents that may prevent defecation and aggravate abdominal distension and discomfort.

(5) Patients with gastrointestinal ulcers and damaged mucosa are prone to absorbing large amounts of magnesium and causing magnesium ion poisoning.

(6) Patients poisoned by central nervous system depressants (such as phenobarbital) should not use this product to induce catharsis to eliminate the poison, so as to prevent aggravation of central nervous system depression. If catharsis is required, sodium sulfate can be used instead.
