Normal value: During 16-38 weeks of pregnancy, the normal width of the lateral ventricle is generally 7.6mm±0.6mm. When the width of the body of the fetal lateral ventricle reaches 10-15mm, it is called mild ventriculomegaly, and the incidence rate is about 1%.

If the width of the lateral ventricle exceeds 15mm, it is severe lateral ventricle enlargement, and when it is accompanied by a shrinkage of the choroid plexus and a hanging state, it is also called hydrocephalus.

In addition, if the fetus has mild ventriculomegaly without any other structural abnormalities, it is called isolated mild ventriculomegaly. About 10% of fetuses with isolated mild ventriculomegaly have chromosomal abnormalities, the most common of which is trisomy 21. Viral infection during pregnancy, especially cytomegalovirus infection, can also lead to abnormal manifestations such as isolated ventriculomegaly and paraventricular mixed echoes.
