What to do if your eyes hurt after welding

Electric welder is a common occupation in construction, hardware and other places. The most feared thing for welders is being hit in the eyes by electric welding. Once the eyes are hit, it will cause burning pain and symptoms such as inability to open the eyes. It often leads to constant tearing, eye spasms, etc. When electric welding light injures the eyes, you must use certain methods to provide first aid in time. Let's learn about this below.

What to do if your eyes hurt after welding

Welding light eye injury refers to the superficial inflammatory reaction of the cornea and conjunctiva caused by the exposure of the eyes to the ultraviolet rays contained in the strong light of electric welding and mercury lamps. It is more common in eye injuries after electric welding, ultraviolet lamps and high-level power sources. The clinical manifestations include foreign body sensation in both eyes, severe pain accompanied by photophobia, tearing and eye spasms. The condition is particularly severe at night, when one cannot fall asleep. It usually heals itself after 24 hours.

Emergency measures for eye injuries caused by electric welding

The first step is to close your eyes and apply a cold towel to your eyes, changing it every twenty minutes. The second step is to use fresh milk (fresh breast milk is best, but fresh milk can be used instead) to drop into the eyes, once every 2 hours. The third step is to use chloramphenicol eye drops, erythromycin eye ointment, etc. to prevent infection. It should be noted that fresh milk, eye drops and eye ointments cannot be dripped at the same time. There must be an interval in between. Generally, it will heal within 1-3 days after the onset of the disease and generally will not cause permanent damage. However, do not be injured by ultraviolet rays multiple times or for a long time to avoid causing chronic blepharitis.

In addition to the above three points, you also need to pay attention to the following points. 1. Dropping boiled and cooled human milk or fresh milk into the eyes can relieve pain and protect the eyes. Apply a cold wet towel to your eyes and change it every 20 minutes. 2. You should close your eyes and rest to reduce light stimulation and friction of eye rotation. Wearing sunglasses can block light and make your eyes feel comfortable. 3. Add 3-5 drops of 0.1% epinephrine eye drops to 10 ml of 0.25% chloramphenicol eye drops, and apply antibiotics or sulfonamide ointment to prevent infection and reduce inflammation.
