Can newborns drink sugar water?

Can newborns drink sugar water?
Newborns are in the early stages of development and are unable to make judgments about various things. Some of the behaviors of their parents at this time will also have a certain impact on the children's future habits. For example, in order to get their children to drink water, many parents will add some white sugar to boiled water. Although this will not harm the children's health, it may cause the children to refuse to drink boiled water in the future. So, how should newborns drink water?

1. Can newborns drink sugar water?

It is best not to add sugar to plain water for babies. The taste buds of newborns are very sensitive. If you add sugar once, the baby will refuse to drink plain water in the future.

For newborns, white sugar can increase the burden on the intestines. Sugar produces excess calories and causes discomfort to the baby. Sugar can ferment abnormally in the intestines to produce gas, causing abdominal bloating, poor appetite and other problems in the baby.

2. What should newborns drink?

Drinking boiled water is the best way to replenish water, but it does not mean that other water cannot be drunk. In order to satisfy children's preference for sweet taste and beautiful colors, we can also make some fruit juice for babies. For example, strawberry water, watermelon juice, orange juice, black plum juice pickled with sugar, etc. In summer, you can also make some anti-heat drinks for your children, such as mung bean soup, winter melon soup, etc.

3. How much water is appropriate for children to drink?

It depends on your age, and the more the better is not necessarily true. During the neonatal period, the amount of water the baby drinks must be strictly controlled because the baby's kidneys are not yet fully developed. 20 ml at a time is enough. As the baby gets older, the amount of water he or she should drink should also increase accordingly. Generally speaking, breast-fed babies need relatively less water, while milk-fed babies need more water. By the age of one, children become more active and need more water. At this time, children should drink water at least 3 times a day, each time with about 100-200 ml of water. The amount should be increased accordingly when the weather is dry and in summer. After one year old, children should drink more than 500 ml of water every day.

4. The harm of not replenishing water in time

The sign of dehydration in the human body is thirst, but for children, we cannot wait until they feel thirsty before letting them drink. This is because children love to play and often ignore the signals of thirst when playing. By the time they are tired and remember to drink, it is too late, which easily leads to the accumulation of metabolic products in the body. It is not conducive to the healthy development of children. Especially in summer, babies sweat more and may suffer from heatstroke if they do not replenish water in time. Children suffering from heat stroke will experience fever, confusion, and sometimes convulsions in the limbs.
