Indications of Notopterygium

What is Notopterygium wilfordii?

Notopterygium incisum Ting ex HT Chang is a perennial herb of the Apiaceae family and the genus Notopterygium. It can grow up to 120 cm in height, with thick rhizomes and erect, cylindrical, purple stems. The basal leaves and the leaves at the bottom of the stem are petiolate, the leaf blades are ternate and tripinnate, with shallow to deep pinnate lobes on the margins; the leaf sheaths are membranous, long and clasping the stem. Compound umbels, lateral ones are often sterile; involucral bracts are linear, caducous early; involucral bracts are linear, flowers are numerous, calyx teeth are ovate-triangular, petals are white, ovate to oblong-ovate, anthers are yellow, elliptical, and stylopodium is flat and slightly raised. The fruits are oblong, blooming in July and bearing fruit in August-September.

Main efficacy of Qianghuo:

Dispel wind, cold and dampness, and relieve pain. It is used to treat colds and wind-colds, headaches without sweating, wind-cold-dampness arthralgia, stiff neck and tendons, pain in bones and joints, edema caused by wind and water, carbuncles and sores.

It is used for impotence and spermatorrhea, enuresis and frequent urination, cold pain in the waist and knees, asthma due to kidney deficiency, and diarrhea at dawn; it can be used externally to treat vitiligo and alopecia areata. Dispel cold, expel wind and dampness, and relieve pain.

1. Used for symptoms such as exogenous wind-cold, aversion to cold, fever, headache and body pain. This product has a strong effect of dispelling wind and cold and relieving pain. It is often used together with saposhnikovia divaricata, angelica dahurica, asarum, etc., such as Jiuwei Qianghuo Decoction.

2. Used for limb pain, shoulder and back pain caused by invasion of wind, cold and dampness, especially for pain in the upper body. This product can dispel wind, overcome heat, dispel cold and relieve pain. It is often used together with Saposhnikovia divaricata, such as Qunbi Decoction.
