Why do the wind make my eyes tear up?

Many people who ride electric bikes or electric motorcycles should have had this experience: when riding fast, the wind will blow into the eyes, and tears will appear in the eyes; or when there are strong winds in winter and autumn, the cold wind blows in the face, and tears often flow from the eyes. The above phenomenon is actually what people usually refer to as tears in the wind. In addition, many elderly people are more likely to experience tears in their eyes when exposed to wind.

1. Reasons for crying in the wind

There is a duct system between the human eye and the nasal cavity, called the tear duct. From top to bottom, it is composed of the lacrimal puncta, lacrimal canaliculi, common lacrimal duct, lacrimal sac, and nasolacrimal duct. Its function is to drain tears. That is to say, after the tears are secreted by the lacrimal glands and accessory lacrimal glands, they must be drained through the lacrimal puncta (the upper opening of the lacrimal duct) → lacrimal canaliculus → common lacrimal duct → lacrimal sac → nasolacrimal duct and finally reach the nasal cavity. Many people have had the experience of tasting the bitter taste of eye drops in their mouth a few minutes after applying them. This is the best example that eye drops can flow into the mouth through the tear ducts and nasal cavity with tears. When a normal person is awake and calm, an adult produces 0.5 - 1.0 ml of tears every 16 hours. In addition to moistening the eyeballs and partially evaporating, the remaining tears are drained into the nasal cavity through the lacrimal duct. In the absence of stimulation, the secretion and excretion of tears are balanced. In autumn and winter, when the lacrimal glands are stimulated by cold air, the tear secretion increases reflexively. The lacrimal ducts and lacrimal puncta undergo spasmodic contraction after being stimulated by the cold, and are unable to drain the excess tears for a while, resulting in tearing.

Ingredients: 7 pieces of pig's feet, 350 grams of rock sugar
