Can I get pregnant after having a vasectomy?

Sterilization is a surgery performed to avoid pregnancy, so after the sterilization, the woman is infertile. Women need to go through certain steps and processes to get sterilized, and there are many things to pay attention to after sterilization, especially not having sex immediately. You need to wait until your reproductive system recovers before having sex, otherwise it will have an extremely adverse effect on your physical health!

1. What does it mean for women to have a sterilization?

Female sterilization refers to the method of tubal ligation.

Tubal ligation is a type of tubal sterilization. Sterilization is an artificial method that enables women of childbearing age to achieve the purpose of permanent contraception. Currently, there are two methods: tubal ligation (surgical sterilization) and drug occlusion (drug sterilization). Female sterilization is simple to perform, has few side effects, and is safe and effective. It is one of the contraceptive methods commonly used by women in most developing countries.

The principle of tubal ligation is to close the fallopian tube passage so that the egg cannot combine with the sperm, thus achieving the purpose of contraception. If the fallopian tubes are never opened, female sterilization is a permanent method of birth control.

The best time for female sterilization is to perform it within 3-7 days after the menstruation is completely over; or it can be performed immediately after an early or late abortion. However, it is not easy to perform the surgery within 1 month after a spontaneous abortion or a missed abortion. For those with abdominal wall skin infection, acute or chronic pelvic infection, or general weakness (postpartum hemorrhage, heart, liver, kidney and other diseases with functional failure), or body temperature exceeding 37.5℃ twice within 24 hours, ligation surgery shall not be performed for the time being.

2. Steps for women to undergo sterilization

1. It is advisable to choose a longitudinal incision, but a transverse incision can also be selected. The length is about 2-3cm. For those who have had a ligation after childbirth, the height of the uterine fundus should be determined clearly. If the uterus is too soft after childbirth, it should be gently massaged to harden it. The upper edge of the incision should be two horizontal fingers below the uterine fundus. For those who undergo ligation after menstruation, the lower edge of the incision is two horizontal fingers away from the pubic symphysis (upper edge), that is, 3-4 cm.

2. Cut the skin and subcutaneous fat layer by layer, cut the anterior sheath of the rectus abdominis muscle, and bluntly separate the rectus abdominis muscle. Extract the peritoneum, avoid the bladder and blood vessels, and avoid clamping the subperitoneal bowel. The peritoneum was confirmed and cut open to enter the abdominal cavity.

3. When searching for the fallopian tube, you must be steady, accurate and gentle. You can use the following methods to extract the fallopian tube.

4. All fallopian tubes must be traced back to the fimbria to confirm that the fallopian tubes are correct. Routine examination of both ovaries.

5. The method of blocking the fallopian tube can be based on local experience, but the method must be effective, simple, and have fewer complications.

6. Check whether there is bleeding, hematoma or tissue damage in the abdominal cavity and various layers of the abdominal wall.

7. Count the gauze and instruments, close the abdominal cavity correctly, and suture the abdominal wall layer by layer with silk thread.

8. Cover the wound with sterile gauze.

3. How long after vasectomy can you have sex?

After the sterilization operation, the resistance of the reproductive organs will be weakened. To prevent infection and bleeding, it is not advisable to have sexual intercourse within 2 weeks after sterilization. It is recommended that men and women who have undergone sterilization wait one month before having sex.

Female: 1 month. After female sterilization surgery, sexual intercourse should be resumed one month later, and attention should be paid to vaginal hygiene and daily care.

Male: Half a month. It is also better for men to have sexual intercourse at least half a month after sterilization surgery, as having sexual intercourse too early is not conducive to recovery.
