What to do if you have a mentally retarded child at home

This is a disease of intellectual disability. Mentally retarded patients will show dull sensations, slow reactions, poor memory, and even memory loss. Their language functions are weak, and they often cannot express what they think or what they want. They may also become overly excited, so parents need to provide proper care for them.

Psychological characteristics 1. Dull and slow perception

In life, they can only feel stimuli that are very eye-catching, vivid, large in size, and presented for a long time. Therefore, they receive significantly less external information per unit time than normal children.

2. Lack of concentration

They are often attracted by other sounds and brightly colored things, and thus cannot concentrate, which is often manifested as an inability to focus on listening.

3. Good mechanical memory

This is the best psychological ability of mentally retarded children. They rely on mechanical memory to learn many things that require thinking.

4. Weak language skills

The language problem is quite serious, with 80% having language barriers, difficulty in pronouncing words, and only understanding a few very simple commands. Even though there are very few children with mild intellectual disabilities who can speak, they only use very simple sentences with very poor content, and often have no way to express what they mean.

5. Poor abstract thinking ability

It is difficult for mentally retarded children to truly learn abstract concepts such as color, shape, number, etc. They often rely on conditioned reflexes and memory to learn, and their imagination is not rich. If something they recognize is moved to a different position, it will be difficult to recognize.

6. Easily excited

Mentally retarded children are hyperactive, never stop, and have disorganized behavior; resistant children are withdrawn, timid, and unsociable. Both types of children have poor ability to adapt to the environment and interpersonal skills.

7. Poor willpower

They will cry or go to the teacher when they encounter the slightest difficulty. They are unable to work hard on difficult learning tasks on their own, such as folding a dart or pasting a cut-out apple shape in the middle of a white paper. They have no perseverance at all.

8. Rapid changes in mood

They will burst into tears one moment and burst into laughter the next, and are easily affected by one thing and have inappropriate emotional reactions.

9. Poor ability to live independently

Some parents love their babies and are reluctant to train them to take care of themselves. As a result, many four or five-year-old children with mild to moderate intellectual disabilities cannot eat with a spoon, dress and undress, or go to the toilet by themselves.

10. Have a certain degree of curiosity

They are interested in strangers, easily approach them, and like to surround guests. They will play with things they have never played with before, such as mobile phones and flashlights, and cannot let go of them.
