The difference between clean moxa sticks and medicinal moxa sticks

The method of making moxa sticks is very simple. The main materials to be chosen are moxa wool or moxa grass. After they are all arranged, they are placed on paper and then rolled into moxa sticks. After compacting, they are made into a kind of moxa stick we commonly use. It has many medicinal values and uses in daily life. Its effects and functions are relatively wide, but we must understand the difference between pure moxa sticks and medicinal moxa sticks.

The Chinese Pharmacopoeia states that moxa cones should be placed directly on acupuncture points and burned at a temperature of about 70°C. This method is divided into two types: one is suppurative moxibustion and the other is non-suppurative moxibustion.

Suppurative moxibustion is also called scar moxibustion, skin moxibustion, and pus moxibustion. This method was widely used in ancient times. Because the moxa cone is large, like a date pit, it requires one or two moxibustion treatments to complete. It can cause moxibustion sores, resulting in burns on the skin and rotten flesh, and is extremely painful. Many people are afraid of it and are unwilling to undergo it. This method is still used in modern times. For example, in some places, in order to prevent and treat asthma and chronic bronchitis, they specifically use moxibustion on the acupoints on the back during the dog days of summer. Large sticks are used to burn the acupoints, causing sores to form. This is called pus-inducing moxibustion. Although the effect is good, most doctors do not advocate rushing for results. Instead, they use a gentle method of applying small sticks multiple times instead of large sticks. Apply moxibustion slowly and the effect will be seen over time.

Operation skills: First, do a good job of ideological work on the patient, adjust the body position, identify the acupuncture points, disinfect with 75% alcohol cotton balls, and then you can also use gentian violet or mercurochrome or use a pen to make a small dot to make a mark, take very fine moxa, make it into a conical moxa cone the size of a grain of wheat (slightly larger than a grain of wheat is also OK), then rotate it upright on the acupuncture point, and then use incense to gently touch and light it from the top to make it burn evenly downwards. For the first one, burn halfway when you feel heat and extinguish it with your fingers; for the second one, do not remove the moxa ash and keep it in place, burn most of the way, and extinguish it when you feel very hot. When the third flame is about to burn out, quickly press it out when you feel severe pain. At the same time, the doctor can use the left thumb, index finger, and middle finger to massage or tap the area around the acupoint to relieve pain. If you do moxibustion several times, it won’t be so painful when you do it again. After patiently moxibustioning for more than ten times, you will feel the heat passing away but there will be no more pain. If you moxibustion repeatedly, you will achieve the goal of suppuration within a few days. If the skin does not become suppurative, long-term moxibustion will also be effective without the pain of burning. This method is now widely used.
