Nourishing Yin and Suppressing Yang

Zhu Zhenheng, courtesy name Yanxiu, was a native of Yiwu, Zhejiang Province. He was born in 1282 and died in 1358. In his later years, he was honored as "Danxi Weng" and "Mr. Danxi". He was one of the four great medical scientists of the Jin and Yuan Dynasties and a representative of the Yin-nourishing School.

Zhu Danxi developed the academic thoughts of Liu Hejian, Zhang Zihe and Li Dongyuan. In his "Gezhi Yu Lun", he put forward the theory of "Xianghuo" and "excess yang and insufficient yin". It is believed that "people are born from the Qi of heaven and earth; the Qi of heaven is yang, while the Qi of earth is yin; however, Qi is often in excess while blood is often insufficient." He connected the changes in the natural world with the laws of the human body's growth, growth and aging to explain the connotation of life. The sky and the sun are yang, and the earth and the moon are yin. The sun is yang and is always full, while the moon is yin and is always waning, so it is said that the sun is stronger than the yang. The Yin energy in the human body waxes and wanes with the moon and is difficult to form but easy to lose. However, a person's Yin essence gradually declines with age. "A man's essence will stop at the age of 64, and a woman's menstruation will stop at the age of 49. A man's Yin can only supply 30 years of sight, hearing, speech and movement, and it is already depleted. Human desires are endless, and how can we supply Yin energy, which is difficult to form and easy to lose?" Based on this, the theory of "excess yang and insufficient yin" was established, and the method of nourishing yin and suppressing yang was proposed as the great method of health preservation, with nourishing yin and reducing fire as important treatment measures. Dabuyin Pills is a representative prescription for nourishing yin and reducing fire.

Nourishes Yin and reduces fire

Dabuyin Pills come from the Danxi Xinfa*Busun Fifty-one chapter, and its original name was "Dabuyin Pills". Its function is to "reduce yin fire and replenish kidney water." Based on the theory that "Yang is often in excess and Yin is often insufficient", Zhu Danxi explained that the pathogenesis of asthenia is due to insufficient Yin to match Yang, insufficient water to control fire, loss of essence and blood, burning of the phase fire, and depletion of the true Yin. Therefore, the Dabu Yin Pill was formulated, with Anemarrhena asphodeloides, Turtle Shell, and Rehmannia glutinosa to nourish Yin and replenish essence, and save the source of water; Phellodendron chinense to clear the fire in the lower burner to avoid the loss of Yin essence; pig spinal cord was added because it can open up the kidneys, with bone entering bone and marrow entering marrow. Wang Qie'an of the Qing Dynasty commented on this prescription: "This is a medicine for the foot Shaoyin. All four are medicines for nourishing yin and tonifying the kidney. Tonifying water is to reduce fire. This is the so-called strengthening of the water master to control the sunlight." The dosage of Rehmannia glutinosa and Tortoise Shell in the formula is relatively large, and the ratio with Anemarrhena asphodeloides and Phellodendron chinense is 3:2. It can be seen that this prescription is mainly used to nourish yin and strengthen the foundation, and secondly to reduce fire and clear the source. The diseases treated are mainly due to yin deficiency and excess of fire, and symptoms include bone steaming, fatigue fever, night sweats and spermatorrhea, cough and hemoptysis, irritability, heat and pain in the feet and knees, red tongue with little coating, and a weak and rapid pulse on the radial side.
