Where to apply acupuncture for hiccups

Hiccups are something that everyone will encounter. There are many reasons that cause hiccups, and the main cause is the gastrointestinal tract. Some hiccups are mild, while others are more severe and painful. In this case, you can choose acupuncture to relieve the symptoms, and it is effective quickly. But where should acupuncture be applied for hiccups? The specific acupuncture location depends on the cause of the hiccups. The acupuncturist will treat the patient based on his or her actual situation.

To put it bluntly, it's nothing more than your diaphragm being stimulated. For example, cold stimulation, a full meal, eating too fast, or eating dry, hard, sour, spicy, or cold food can all cause hiccups, and the hiccups usually last for a short time. The stimulation mostly comes from the stomach. This also explains the noise I often hear recently: in late summer and early autumn, the weather turns cooler, and the stimulation of cold air can easily cause hiccups, a reflex movement.

Generally speaking, this occasional, short-term hiccups are a normal physiological reaction. Even if you ignore them, they will stop on their own after a while, or drinking hot water can help relieve them. Of course, some hiccups are caused by illness, which is another matter.

Massage 7 acupoints to stop hiccups

1. Press Shaoshang acupoint

Shaoshang point is located one fen away from the fingernail on the side of the thumb. When hiccups occur, press the Shaoshang point with your thumb so that the soreness lasts for half a minute, and the hiccups will stop. This method is really effective. When I have hiccups, I just press this acupoint and the hiccups stop.

2. Pinch the middle finger

Use your left and right fingers to pinch the top of your middle finger hard. After about 1 to 2 minutes, the hiccups will stop.

3. Pinch and press Neiguan acupoint

Use your fingers to pinch the "Neiguan acupoint", which is located 6 to 7 cm inside the wrist, about 2 fingers below the first horizontal line. It is also more effective in stopping hiccups.

4. Shaving the brow bone

Press the thumbs of both hands on the temples on both sides, and use the side of the bent index finger to scrape from the inside to the outside of the brow bone, applying a little force, until you feel a slight soreness.

5. Tanzhong Point

Lie on your back to locate the acupoint. The operator points the thumb at the Tanzhong point (located on the chest, the midpoint of the line between the two nipples), presses lightly at first and then heavily, for 2 to 3 minutes. To consolidate the therapeutic effect, rest for 15 minutes and then press for another 2 to 3 minutes.

6. Fish waist point

The patient lies on his back, and the masseur uses the thumbs of both hands to press the two Yuyao points (the midpoint of the eyebrows) at the same time, from bottom to top, with force from light to heavy, and the patient will feel soreness and swelling. During the massage, the patient should hold his breath and then exhale forcefully, repeating this process two or three times, with each massage lasting 2 minutes. If the condition does not improve, repeat the massage after 24 hours.

7. Zanzhu Point

Lie flat or sit half-way, and press the Zanzhu point (the depression on the inner edge of the eyebrow) with the tips of both thumbs. Use light force at first and massage in a spiral clockwise direction. Gradually increase the force until a feeling of soreness, numbness, or swelling is felt. Continue pressing the point until the eyeball and eye socket can feel soreness and swelling. It usually takes about 1 minute to take effect, and sometimes about 5 minutes. Continue massaging for 3 to 5 minutes after the hiccups stop. For severe cases, press twice a day, and a course of treatment is 5 days.
