Can chronic gastritis eat glutinous rice?

Diet has always been the focus of attention for patients with stomach problems. There are many things that patients with stomach problems cannot eat, and almost all patients with stomach problems have to avoid certain foods. Because food goes directly into the stomach, it will irritate the stomach. Once food that is harmful to the stomach is ingested, it will aggravate gastritis, and in severe cases it may even lead to gastric ulcers and gastric perforation. Patients with chronic gastritis should consume more stomach-nourishing foods and treat stomach problems during recuperation. Then someone will ask, can patients with chronic gastritis eat glutinous rice?

Glutinous rice is a variation of rice, also known as Jiangmi and Yuanmi. There are no less than a hundred varieties, most of which are produced in the south of the Yangtze River, such as the early-harvested Liuyueglutinous rice, Taishanglutinous rice, and Tiedanuo; and the late-harvested pearl glutinous rice, Jingquan glutinous rice, and fragrant glutinous rice. There are also some glutinous rices that not only have unique colors, but can also be used as medicine, such as the purple glutinous rice produced in Yunnan, the red jujube glutinous rice in Wanshan area, and the duck blood glutinous rice in Changshu, which are all fine glutinous rices.

Glutinous rice is a mild tonic that has the effects of replenishing deficiency, nourishing blood, strengthening the spleen and warming the stomach, and stopping sweating. It is suitable for nausea, loss of appetite, diarrhea caused by spleen and stomach deficiency and cold, and spontaneous sweating, shortness of breath and weakness, and abdominal distension during pregnancy caused by qi deficiency. Modern scientific research shows that glutinous rice contains protein, fat, carbohydrates, calcium, phosphorus, iron, B vitamins and starch, and is a warming and strengthening product.

If your mental and physical strength does not recover for a long time after an illness, you feel tired, or have a weak constitution, or even feel dizzy, eating glutinous rice and red dates porridge while taking medication can make the symptoms disappear and speed up your recovery. However, patients with gastric ulcers should be careful when eating glutinous rice, because the occurrence of gastric and duodenal ulcers is related to gastric acid. In daily life, any factors that can promote the increase of gastric acid can aggravate the condition or cause recurrence of ulcer disease.

Like other grains, glutinous rice is mainly composed of starch. However, the condensation and connection method of glucose molecules in glutinous rice starch is different from that of other grain starches. Therefore, after glutinous rice is cooked, whether it is glutinous rice or other foods made with glutinous rice, its viscosity is relatively high. After people eat it into the stomach, it is relatively difficult to digest. The time to be discharged from the stomach is prolonged and it stays in the stomach, thereby stimulating the gastric wall cells and the pyloric G cells of the stomach, and promoting increased gastric acid secretion. Therefore, ulcer patients eating various foods made from glutinous rice will often aggravate the pain and even induce serious complications such as gastric perforation and bleeding.

It can be seen that ulcer patients should not eat too many glutinous rice products regardless of whether they are in the active stage of the disease with symptoms or in the recovery stage after the ulcer has healed and there are no symptoms.

Warm reminder: Patients with stomach problems can eat glutinous rice appropriately, but not in excess. However, we don’t know how to control the amount of glutinous rice intake. Therefore, our advice is to avoid eating it if possible.
