The cardia at the junction of the upper end of the stomach and the esophagus is relatively relaxed, while the pylorus at the junction of the lower end of the stomach and the duodenum is relatively tight, making the esophagus and stomach resemble a long-necked open bottle, and the contents of the stomach can easily flow back through the esophagus. There is no obvious nausea before vomiting in young infants. When vomiting, the baby often sprays out both the mouth and nose, and aspiration pneumonia may occur due to inhalation into the airway.

In daily life, neonatal vomiting and milk regurgitation are often confused, but in fact there is a certain difference between the two. Most of the time, spit-up milk flows out naturally from the corners of the child's mouth. The child is very peaceful and has no obvious abnormal symptoms. Children are often seen to be irritable before vomiting, and have a painful expression during vomiting, with vomitus often rushing out of the stomach.

There are many reasons for babies to vomit: the most common ones are improper feeding, such as feeding too quickly, too much milk, the hole on the rubber nipple of artificial feeding is too large or too small, so that a large amount of air is swallowed into the stomach during feeding and causing vomiting; swallowing of amniotic fluid containing meconium or blood during delivery; irritation of the gastric mucosa by taking certain medications; gastrointestinal dysfunction caused by excessively hot or cold environment; internal and external infections of the digestive tract such as bronchopneumonia, epidemic diarrhea, sepsis, meningitis, etc.; surgical diseases should not be ignored, and we should be extremely vigilant against various digestive tract malformations such as congenital esophageal atresia, pyloric hypertrophy stenosis, congenital megacolon, or atresia or stenosis of any intestinal segment.

When the baby vomits, you should carefully observe the nature of the vomit. As long as the vomit is not brown or bloody (except for the mother's broken nipple), not grass green or fecal, the child's stomach is not bloated, there is no fever, the reaction is quick, the skin color is rosy, the bowel movements are normal, and he still wants to eat after vomiting, it is not a problem. In order to reduce the occurrence of vomiting, the baby is usually held upright after feeding, and the mother leans over the shoulder to pat the baby's back to help him burp out the swallowed air, and then the baby is gently laid flat on the right side.

Pay attention to the feeding method. If the above measures are ineffective, or if vomiting is accompanied by mental depression, fever or body temperature not rising, poor appetite, gradual weight loss, sunken eye sockets, dry and wrinkled skin, full anterior fontanelle, shortness of breath and cyanotic lips, foaming at the mouth, gray and patterned skin color, bloated abdomen, watery or bloody diarrhea, constipation, etc., any of these signs should be taken very seriously and you must go to the hospital immediately to find out the cause and treat it in time.
