Ophiopogon japonicus is cold in nature and tastes sweet and slightly bitter. Ophiopogon japonicus contains a variety of steroidal saponins, carotene, mucus, glycogen, stigmasterol and other ingredients. Pharmacological experiments have confirmed that Ophiopogon japonicus has the effect of increasing white blood cell count, prolonging the existence time of antigen, enhancing immune function and nucleotide production rate, and promoting the production of immune substances such as antigen, complement, interferon plug, and lysozyme. Therefore, Ophiopogon japonicus can enhance the body's positive energy and strengthen its resistance to evil, thereby reducing the occurrence of diseases. As the Compendium of Materia Medica often says, "Long-term use is beneficial to the body, keeping you young and free from hunger."

To treat angina pectoris caused by coronary heart disease, take 45 grams of Ophiopogon japonicus, boil it in water to obtain 30-40 ml, and take it in divided doses for 3-18 months. It is effective in relieving angina pectoris, chest tightness and shortness of breath.

It nourishes yin and produces body fluid, relieves cough and moistens the lungs. It is used for symptoms such as lack of body fluid, dry mouth, dry cough and hemoptysis caused by lung and stomach yin deficiency; palpitations and easy fright caused by heart yin deficiency; and heat damage to body fluids in the middle and late stages of fever.

For the treatment of chronic gastritis, take 9 grams each of Ophiopogon japonicus and Scutellaria baicalensis, 10 grams each of Codonopsis pilosula, Polygonatum odoratum and Morinda officinalis. Decoction in water, 1 dose per day. It is effective for those with insufficient stomach yin.

To treat physical overdraft caused by sweating in summer, take 10 grams each of Ophiopogon japonicus and Wild ginseng and 6 grams of Schisandra chinensis, decocted in water, 2 doses per day. It is effective for sweating, physical overexertion, chest tightness, palpitations, low blood pressure, excessive sweating and dry mouth, fatigue and drowsiness (Editor's note: this prescription was created by Li Gao, a famous Chinese medicine doctor in the Jin Dynasty. The full name of the prescription is "Shengmai San", which has been made into Shengmai original juice and oil).

To treat dry intestinal constipation, take 15 grams each of Ophiopogon japonicus, Rehmannia glutinosa, and Adenophora Root. Decoction in water, 1 dose per day. It has the effect of promoting digestion and is used to relieve constipation.

It nourishes yin and produces body fluid, moistens the lungs, relieves cough and purifies the heart. It is used for dry cough due to lung dryness, cough due to consumptive tuberculosis, dry body fluid, palpitations and insomnia, quenches thirst due to internal heat, constipation due to dry intestines, and diphtheria due to pharyngitis.

For the treatment of diabetes, take 30 grams of Phragmites australis, 15 grams of Ophiopogon japonicus, and 12 grams of Anemarrhena asphodeloides. First boil over low heat for 30 minutes, filter out the decoction, add 500ml of water to the residue, bring to a boil, then switch to low heat and boil for 20 minutes, remove the residue and take the juice, mix the juices from the two decoctions and take one dose per day. It is used for diabetics with dry mouth and throat, excessive drinking, restlessness, or low-grade fever, red tongue, and weak pulse.

For the treatment of acute and chronic bronchitis, take 9 grams each of Ophiopogon japonicus, Asparagus cochinchinensis, Anemarrhena asphodeloides, Fritillaria cirrhosa, and Stemona japonica, and 12 grams of Adenophora scabra. Decoction in water, 1 dose per day. This prescription is suitable for patients with acute and chronic bronchitis, whose main symptoms are dry cough due to kidney yin deficiency.
