What does placenta mean?

The appearance of primary and secondary placentas makes many people think that the baby is having twins, but this is not the case. If there are two fetal heartbeats, we can say that the expectant mother is having twins, but the primary and secondary placentas cannot explain the problem. I thought the placenta was not the place where the baby was conceived, it was just the baby's "food" and the baby got his nutrition from it. What does the appearance of that placenta mean?

The placenta is an important organ for material exchange between the fetus and the mother. It is an organ that combines the tissues between the mother and the fetus during human pregnancy and grows from the embryonic embryonic membrane and the maternal endometrium. The fetus develops in the uterus and relies on the placenta to obtain nutrition from the mother, while both maintain a considerable degree of independence. The placenta also synthesizes a variety of hormones, enzymes, cytokines, etc. to maintain normal pregnancy. The placenta is also a traditional Chinese medicine, called placenta, also known as human placenta, afterbirth, chorion, afterbirth, and fetal membrane.

There are four levels of placental maturity: grade 0, grade I, grade II and grade III. Level 1 indicates that the placenta is basically mature; level 2 indicates that the placenta is mature; level 3 indicates that the placenta is aged. Due to calcification and cellulose deposition, the placenta's ability to distribute oxygen and nutrients is reduced, and the fetus is in danger at any time.

An accessory placenta refers to a placenta with one or more placental lobules developed in the fetal membrane at a certain distance from the main placenta. The accessory placenta is connected to the main placenta by blood vessels derived from the fetus. The accessory placenta receives fetal blood circulation through the fetal membrane between the accessory lobe and the main placenta via medium-sized chorionic blood vessels.

Causes:

The mechanism of occurrence is still unclear. It is believed that endometrial dysplasia or endometrial inflammation, poor nutritional conditions or blood supply at the site of blastocyst attachment, prompting the placenta to find a better decidua site and placenta migration, thus forming an accessory placenta.

Clinical manifestations:

If accessory placenta is not diagnosed before delivery and is not carefully examined after delivery, it can easily lead to retained accessory placenta and severe postpartum hemorrhage.

Ultrasound:

Scan

The placenta is located by scanning the uterine wall with a series of longitudinal and transverse sections. If placental echoes are found outside the main placenta, multiple sections should be taken to show the relationship between the two. Only after confirming that there is no connection between the two can a diagnosis be made.

Performance

(1) Two-dimensional ultrasound shows that there are one or more solid masses with the same echo as the placenta outside the main placenta, which are at least 2 cm away from the main placenta.

(2) Color Doppler blood flow imaging showed that there were blood vessels connecting this solid mass to the main placenta, and the vascular Doppler spectrum indicated that they were fetal blood vessels.

(3) If the accessory placenta crosses the internal cervical os from the main placenta to the opposite side, attention should be paid to whether there is vasa previa.
