Symptoms of benign liver tumors

Symptoms of benign liver tumors

Nowadays, organ tumors are very common, and almost every organ in the human body has the potential to develop a tumor. If the organ tumor is benign, it is relatively easy to treat and it is easier to recover. Tumors of malignant organs have a high possibility of becoming cancerous. After examination, some patients were found to have benign tumors in their livers. In this case, the patient's condition can be quickly suppressed. So, what are the symptoms of benign liver tumors?

1. Giant regenerative nodules

This disease can be multiple or solitary. The nodules will protrude toward the surface of the liver and occasionally be stained with bile. Giant regenerative nodules of the liver are mainly seen in patients with severe acute liver injury or chronic liver disease. The incidence in chronic liver disease can be as high as 14%. This disease has no specific symptoms and is often discovered during the follow-up of chronic liver disease. The key to treatment is to distinguish benign from malignant regenerative nodules, and liver puncture biopsy can confirm the diagnosis.

2. Lipoma

Primary hepatic lipoma is very rare and is usually found incidentally during imaging studies or autopsy. Variant lipomas include myelolipoma containing hematopoietic tissue, angiolipoma with thick-walled blood vessels, and vascular myofascial lipoma containing smooth muscle.

3. Stromal hamartoma

Stromal hamartomas are rare, solitary, tumor-like, deformed lesions of the liver. It is more common in children under 2 years old, accounting for about 5% of childhood liver tumors. It is occasionally seen in adults and may be accompanied by tuberous sclerosis. The most common symptom is progressive, painless abdominal bloating. Some children can be felt in the abdomen when they are born. Stromal hamartomas are mostly located in the right lobe of the liver and are often large cystic masses with clear boundaries and no capsule. The masses contain jelly-like stroma and residual liver tissue. In this disease, liver function is generally normal, and when the mass is large it compresses the bile duct or portal vein. Ultrasound, CT and MRI can show characteristic cystic masses. Although interstitial hamartomas are benign lesions, they often cause compression symptoms and should be surgically removed in principle.

4. Inflammatory pseudotumor of the liver

This disease is a restricted lesion containing inflammatory cells and is also called inflammatory myofibroblastoma. The lesions are often located around the liver hilum and vary in size, ranging from several centimeters to even occupying an entire liver lobe. The cause of this disease is unclear, and it may be secondary to thrombosis and vascular embolism. Most cases heal on their own and therefore do not require special medical treatment.
