What to do if your eyes are lacking oxygen

Everyone should know that eye hypoxia is a very distressing disease and it cannot completely relieve the patient's symptoms. Eye hypoxia is caused by not paying attention to eye health, which requires strict control of living habits and healthy diet. Lack of oxygen in the eyes causes people to worry about gains and losses in life, which has a serious impact on the eyes. In order to solve the problem of eye hypoxia, the relevant personnel went to the hospital's ophthalmology department in time and asked the doctor for comprehensive treatment. So, what should we do if our eyes lack oxygen?

Eye hypoxia refers to corneal hypoxia to be more precise. There are no blood vessels on the cornea. The oxygen it needs comes from air, 80%, the limbal vascular network, and the remaining 5% from aqueous humor. It is not difficult to find that the main reason for corneal hypoxia is contact with air or the oxygen content of the air itself.

There is a problem with the air permeability of contact lenses or orthokeratology lenses worn by myopic patients. The daily wearing time should not be too long, otherwise it will cause corneal hypoxia. When preventing myopia, doctors recommend increasing outdoor activities. The oxygen content in outdoor air is higher than that in indoor air, and it has better circulation, which is beneficial for the cornea to absorb oxygen.

There are no blood vessels on a normal cornea. The network-like supply system formed by the peripheral blood vessels ends at the transparent area of the cornea, allowing the cornea to absorb a small amount of oxygen through the blood. If the cornea is hypoxic, the limbal vascular network will extend deep into the transparent area of the cornea to supply oxygen to the cornea, leading to the formation of corneal pannus, which is clinically manifested by the growth of long and thin blood vessels into the cornea.

Aqueous humor is not the tear film that lubricates the surface of the eye when we blink. It is located inside the eye and has the function of regulating intraocular pressure and providing nutrients to the eye, including oxygen. The limbal vascular network and aqueous humor provide 20% of the oxygen needed by the cornea, which is inseparable from factors such as the body's own health and balanced nutrition.

Why are roasted leeks good for corneal oxygen supply? Some people say that after being roasted, leeks can volatilize the sulfides, preventing the sulfides from competing with oxygen atoms in the human body, thereby increasing the oxygen supply to the eye tissues. Even if this makes sense, it is an indirect way and its effect can be described as negligible. It is far less direct and rapid than the eyes directly contacting the air to absorb oxygen.

Normally, the cornea will not be hypoxic. Corneal hypoxia is mostly related to people's unreasonable use of eyes. The eyes are under great strain and consume a lot of oxygen. In addition, people's outdoor activities have been greatly reduced, resulting in insufficient oxygen needed by the cornea. Corneal hypoxia may also be related to certain eye diseases, such as trachoma.
