Can hair follicles regenerate?

Nowadays, more and more people are suffering from hair loss, which has a great impact on the appearance of the human body. Many people with hair loss want to take some measures to deal with it. Hair loss is directly related to the existence of hair follicles. If you want to treat hair loss, you must first understand the hair follicles. Many people with hair loss have dead hair follicles. Many people have doubts about whether hair follicles can regenerate. Here we will introduce whether hair follicles can regenerate.

The number of hair follicles is determined at birth, and once they die, they will not grow again, so hair follicles are a very precious non-renewable resource.

The hair follicle is a bag-like epithelium formed continuously by epidermal cells. Its base is the dermal papilla which is recessed in the dermis, with a hair in the center. One side of the arrector pili muscle is obliquely attached to the wall of the follicle. Above the attachment point is the short neck of the sebaceous gland entering the hair follicle. The opening of the hair follicle on the skin surface is the follicular pore. Hair follicles are located in the dermis and subcutaneous tissue, and can be divided into three parts: the follicular infundibulum, the follicular isthmus, and the lower part of the follicle.

constitute

The hair follicle is a sheath-like structure that surrounds the hair root, and from the inside to the outside it is divided into the inner root sheath, outer root sheath and fibrous sheath.

1. Inner root sheath

The inner root sheath originates from the epidermis and is divided into three layers from the inside to the outside: the sheath, the Huxley layer, and the Henle layer. The sheath, also known as the sheath keratin membrane, is a layer of cells that are stacked on top of each other; the Huxley layer is composed of 1 to 3 layers of cells; and the Henle layer is composed of relatively flat cells arranged in a single row.

2. Outer root sheath

The outer root sheath originates from the epidermis and is composed of one to several layers of cells, the outermost layer of which is rectangular columnar epithelial cells.

3. Fiber Sheath

The fibrous sheath originates from the dermis and can be divided into three layers. The inner layer is a transparent glass-like film, the middle layer is composed of dense, wavy fibrous tissue, and the outer layer is composed of collagen fibers and elastic fibers, with no obvious boundaries with the surrounding connective tissue.

Function

Hair grows from follicles, through which hair absorbs nutrients from the body to support hair growth. The epithelial cells of the hair follicle tissue can divide and reproduce, causing the hair to be continuously replaced and grow. However, as we age, the function of the hair follicles gradually weakens, and hair loss occurs.
