What is hyperprolactinemia

What is hyperprolactinemia

Among the many factors that lead to female infertility, hyperprolactinemia is one of the most difficult to treat. This disease not only causes amenorrhea and infertility, but it may also lead to a decrease in female sexual desire and even cause women to experience menopausal symptoms prematurely. This shows the harm of hyperprolactinemia. However, it should be noted that hyperprolactinemia is not exclusive to women.

Men may also suffer from hyperprolactinemia. If a man suffers from hyperprolactinemia, it will not only affect sperm production and lead to infertility, but may also cause testicular atrophy and make male friends lose their sexual ability.

The following are common symptoms of hyperprolactinemia.

1. Infrequent menstruation or amenorrhea. Menstruation may be normal at the beginning, but gradually becomes infrequent menstruation and even amenorrhea. Luteinizing hormone levels are low, normal fluctuations disappear, leading to anovulation. Estrogen cannot cause positive feedback, which has a certain impact on the patient's psychology and physiology.

2. Osteoporosis. Due to the possible decrease in estrogen levels, it also has a negative impact on bone density and may cause osteoporosis. In addition, patients may also experience headaches and visual field defects. Patients with the disease should have a positive attitude to face it and not have an escapist mentality.

3. Infertility. High prolactin acts on the pituitary gland, inhibiting the secretion of follicle-stimulating hormone and luteinizing hormone. If the follicle-stimulating hormone is too low, it is not enough to mature the follicles, and if the luteinizing hormone is too low, the luteinizing hormone peak cannot occur, so ovulation does not occur and infertility occurs. Excessive prolactin can interfere with the function of the gonads. When the blood prolactin concentration increases, the prolactin level in the follicular fluid also increases, the estrogen level decreases, the granulosa cells decrease significantly, and the secretion of progesterone decreases, causing luteal insufficiency and leading to infertility or early pregnancy miscarriage.

After knowing the symptoms of hyperprolactinemia, we will briefly introduce the treatment of this disease. The three main treatments for hyperprolactinemia are treatment of primary factors, surgical treatment, and ovulation induction treatment. In addition, although the chance of men suffering from this disease is relatively small, due to the serious harm, it is recommended that male friends do not ignore it.
