Symptoms of pharyngeal leprosy

Symptoms of pharyngeal leprosy

Pharyngeal leprosy is a disease caused by Mycobacterium leprae. This disease can affect our skin and nerves. It is also a chronic infectious disease. Usually, the number of male patients with this disease is higher than that of female patients. When this disease occurs, we will suffer very serious consequences, and sometimes it will damage our image, so we must learn more about this disease. So what are the symptoms of pharyngeal leprosy? Let’s learn about it together.

Although pharyngeal leprosy is extremely harmful, as long as we pay more attention to this disease and understand its symptoms, we can detect the disease in time. Only in this way can we receive treatment as soon as possible and get rid of the influence of this disease as soon as possible.

In addition to acute edema of the pharyngeal mucosa in the initial stage, it generally presents nodular infiltration, dryness and atrophy of the mucosa, and nodular infiltration may occur in the uvula, hard palate, soft palate, palatine arch and tonsils. The defect scars caused by the destruction of the lesions are often radial.

Most leprosy lesions occur in the nose. Sometimes, before systemic symptoms appear, a large number of leprosy bacteria can be found in nasal secretion smears, which are highly contagious. Pharyngeal leprosy is less common and is mostly caused by the spread of nasal tumor leprosy downward. Except for the acute edema of pharyngeal mucosa in the initial stage, it generally presents nodular infiltration, the mucosa is dry and atrophic, and nodular infiltration may occur in the uvula, hard palate, soft palate, palatine arch and tonsils. The defects and scars caused by the destruction of the lesions are often radial. The patient had absent gag reflex and open nasal speech, but no pain.

The diagnosis can be confirmed by finding Mycobacterium leprae in secretions or biopsy of lesions based on the history of contact with leprosy, chronic course of the disease, damage to the skin, mucous membranes and peripheral nerves throughout the body. Late-stage leprosy must be differentiated from tuberculosis and syphilis.

Invasion of the great auricular nerve can cause it to become thicker and larger. The facial nerve may go into spasm due to stimulation from the invasion of the lesion, or peripheral facial paralysis may occur due to compression from the lesion. The simultaneous presence of spasm and facial paralysis is a characteristic of leprosy facial paralysis.

This is the end of the explanation about the symptoms of pharyngeal leprosy. I hope it will be helpful to you. Although pharyngeal leprosy can harm our image and health, as long as we pay more attention to this disease, we must seek treatment as soon as possible when the symptoms appear, and we also need to do a good job of care in daily life. Only in this way can we get rid of the suffering of pharyngeal leprosy as soon as possible.
