Traditional Chinese medicine's treatment for headaches is actually more pure than Western medicine's, because traditional Chinese medicine can not only treat the symptoms but also the root cause, which Western medicine cannot do. In addition, Chinese medicine treatment of headaches generally does not harm the physical health of our patients. Headache is a common clinical symptom, which is usually limited to the upper part of the head, including the pain above the line connecting the brow arch, the upper edge of the helix and the external occipital protuberance. There are many causes of headaches, including neuralgia, intracranial infection, intracranial space-occupying lesions, cerebrovascular disease, extracranial head and facial diseases, and systemic diseases such as acute infection and poisoning. The age of onset is common in young, middle-aged and elderly people.

There are many causes of headaches, which can be roughly divided into primary and secondary types. The former cannot be attributed to a specific cause and can also be called idiopathic headache, such as migraine and tension-type headache; the latter may involve various intracranial lesions such as cerebrovascular disease, intracranial infection, craniocerebral trauma, systemic diseases such as fever, internal environment disorders and abuse of psychoactive drugs.

TCM treatment for headache

1. 10 grams of cicada molt, 20 grams of chrysanthemum, 15 grams each of red peony root and vitex rotundifolia, 30 grams of white peony root, 30 grams of chuanxiong, 10 grams of scorpion, 10 grams of pangolin, and 3 centipedes. Decoction in water, one dose per day, twice a day. Suitable for stubborn headaches.

2. 20 grams of Gastrodia elata, 30 grams of white peony root, 30 grams of Uncaria rhynchophylla, 30 grams of Chuanxiong, 12 grams of Asarum, 15 grams of Ligusticum chuanxiong, and 50 grams of Semen Cassiae. Decoction in water, take one dose daily, divided into two doses.

3. 120g of Chuanxiong, 120g of Qianghuo, 100g of Angelica (fried with wine), 100g of White Peony Root (fried with vinegar), and 8g of fried Burdock Seed. Grind the above medicines into powder and mix well, take 6 grams each time, add 3 grams of white sugar, 3 times a day. Suitable for migraine.

4. Take equal parts of scorpion, centipede, silkworm and earthworm and grind them into fine powder. Take 2 grams each time, 3 times a day, with warm water. Suitable for headache caused by blood stasis and obstruction of collaterals.

5. 30 grams of Angelica dahurica, 30 grams of Schizonepeta tenuifolia, 15 grams of Saposhnikovia divaricata, 30 grams of ginseng, 15 grams of Chuanxiong, 15 grams of safflower, and 15 grams of peach kernel. Grind the above medicines into powder, add refined honey to make pills, each pill is 6 grams. Take one pill each time, twice a day. It is best to take it with decoction of Schizonepeta tenuifolia. Suitable for blood deficiency type headache.
