What causes hematuria? How to treat it?

Hematuria is a symptom that occurs in some people. Generally speaking, the appearance of hematuria more or less indicates that people have some kind of disease. So, what causes hematuria?

Causes of hematuria:

95%-98% of hematuria is caused by urinary system diseases. Among primary glomerular diseases, some have hematuria as the main clinical manifestation, such as nephropathy, thin basement membrane nephropathy, acute nephritis, etc. Another type of hematuria is its main clinical manifestation. For example, in chronic nephritis, patients with diffuse proliferative glomerulonephritis or membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis often have hematuria, either microscopic hematuria or paroxysmal gross hematuria. Among secondary glomerular diseases, purpuric nephritis is the disease with hematuria as the main clinical manifestation. Among hereditary kidney diseases, polycystic kidney disease is one that causes hematuria.

One of the clinical manifestations of hemorrhagic diseases such as thrombocytopenic purpura, hemophilia, and malignant histiocytosis is often hematuria; one of the clinical manifestations of connective tissue diseases such as lupus erythematosus, dermatomyositis, and scleroderma is often hematuria; one of the clinical manifestations of cardiovascular diseases such as heart failure and renal embolism is often hematuria; one of the clinical manifestations of endocrine and metabolic diseases such as diabetic nephropathy and hyperparathyroidism is often hematuria.

Treatment of hematuria:

Patients with hematuria should not do strenuous exercise on a daily basis. They should drink plenty of water and rest in bed to relieve discomfort. If edema occurs, it is not appropriate to drink more water. If the amount of bleeding is heavy, hemostatic drugs should be used according to the doctor's instructions. However, to avoid worsening of the disease, patients should not use drugs that cause hematuria, such as mannitol and glycerol. If the cause of hematuria is urinary tract infection, oral antibiotics can be taken according to the doctor's instructions to eliminate inflammation and control the condition.
