What causes yellow urine in babies? what to do?

Urine is a product of human metabolism. A normal baby's urine is generally colorless, transparent or light yellow liquid with a special fresh smell. This is because the urine contains a yellow urochrome. So what are the reasons for yellow urine in babies?

Reasons for yellow urine in newborn babies:

Since the baby's kidney function is not yet fully developed, if they eat foods containing oxalate or phosphate, such as bananas, oranges, apples, etc., the urine will form crystals when it encounters cold in the winter, making the urine turbid. Family members do not need to panic about this. In addition, newborn babies often have dark urine and a little turbidity 2-3 days after birth. After cooling, there will be reddish brown or light red precipitation. This is the crystallization of urate, which will disappear on its own after a few days. This is also a normal phenomenon.

What to do if your newborn baby has yellow urine:

1. It is normal for your baby's urine to be slightly yellow. Yellow urine is mostly related to the baby's lack of water intake. Babies sweat a lot and grow and develop vigorously, so they consume a lot of water and need a lot of water. You should pay attention to drinking more water, and the phenomenon of yellow urine will gradually alleviate.

Breast milk contains a lot of water, which can meet the baby's body needs. Therefore, as long as the baby is healthy before 6 months of breastfeeding, there is no need for additional water.

It is important to note that fruit and juice cannot replace water. In addition, babies who are not breastfed should pay attention to replenishing water, otherwise it is more likely to cause yellow urine. Mothers should feed their babies at regular times and in regular amounts according to their age. Generally, babies under three months old should be fed about every three hours. As the baby grows older, the feeding interval can be appropriately extended. Don't forget to give the baby some water during this period.

2. If the baby's urine becomes yellow after eating the above-mentioned foods or taking medicines, then generally it is not a problem. The yellow urine at this time is often very short-lived and will return to normal urine color soon after discontinuation of use.

3. The yellow urine of a newborn baby may also be due to physiological jaundice. Because the bilirubin level in the blood is high and can be excreted through urine, the urine becomes yellow. Physiological jaundice generally does not require treatment. As long as you pay attention to keeping the newborn baby warm, feed him appropriately and early, provide enough water and heat energy, expel meconium early, and reduce the enterohepatic circulation of bilirubin, you can reduce the degree of physiological jaundice.

If an older baby's urine is always yellow and is accompanied by symptoms such as fatigue, loss of appetite, and poor spirits, he should go to the hospital for examination in time. If you find that your baby's "yellow urine" is abnormal, you should take the baby's fresh mid-stream urine (excluding the beginning and end of the urine) to the hospital for examination within 1 hour so that you can get a clear diagnosis and timely treatment as soon as possible.
