Some patients always feel a foreign body sensation in the throat when eating, which causes difficulty swallowing. In severe cases, they may also experience symptoms such as difficulty breathing. At present, surgery is the most common method for treating pharyngeal neurothecoma, with good clinical efficacy.

1. Common symptoms

Foreign body sensation in the throat, swallowing disorder, dyspnea, pain, and hearing loss.

The disease grows slowly and may be asymptomatic when small. It may be discovered accidentally or there may be a foreign body sensation or obvious discomfort, followed by swallowing difficulties and voice changes. Larger tumors may cause difficulty breathing, nerve compression may cause pain, and those located in the nasopharynx may cause hearing loss.

Physical examination may reveal round bulges on the posterior and lateral walls of the pharynx with mucosa on the surface. If the tumor is large, the soft palate may bulge or extend beyond the midline of the pharynx, and the palatine arch and tonsils may be displaced. Palpation may reveal a hard mass, sometimes in the same direction as the cranial nerves, and there are signs of nerve involvement.

II. Treatment

Surgical resection is the main approach. Smaller tumors can be removed through the pharynx, while larger tumors can be removed via the cervical route or a combined route with the pharyngeal route. Surgery is currently the effective treatment of choice. The surgery usually adopts the suboccipital retrosigmoid approach. The position of the facial and auditory nerve is carefully identified under electrophysiological testing, and the above nerve is preserved anatomically and functionally as much as possible. During surgery, it is often necessary to grind off part of the posterior wall of the internal auditory canal in order to achieve complete resection of the tumor.

3. Diet

The diet should be light and nutritious. Eat more vegetables (such as cabbage and cauliflower, etc.), radish, sour plum, soybean, beef, mushroom, asparagus, coix seed, etc. These foods contain anti-cancer substances. Fruits, milk, turtle, etc. are rich in various amino acids, vitamins, proteins and easily digestible nourishing foods.

Cancer patients consume a lot of energy, so their diet needs to contain 20% more protein than normal people. Eat less greasy and heavy food; eat less warm and nourishing food such as dog meat and mutton; eat less "irritating foods" such as seafood without shells, bamboo shoots, taro, etc. that are prone to allergies; eat less beverages and snacks containing chemicals, preservatives, and additives. Avoid eating too sour, too spicy, too salty food, smoking, drinking and other irritants.
