What are the reasons for high transaminase? These are the most common reasons

Transaminase is an indispensable substance for our body's metabolism. It is mainly distributed in the liver. If the transaminase level is high, the most common pathological cause is liver disease. There are also some non-pathological causes, such as long-term drinking and strenuous exercise.

1. Viral hepatitis is a common disease that causes high transaminase levels. Other types of hepatitis can also cause high transaminase levels.

2. Many drugs and chemical agents can cause high levels of transaminase, but they will return to normal after stopping the medication.

3. People who drink a lot or for a long time have high transaminase levels.

4. Cirrhosis and liver cancer When cirrhosis is active, high transaminase levels usually occur.

5. Acute attacks of biliary diseases such as cholecystitis and cholelithiasis may cause high blood bilirubin and transaminase levels in addition to fever, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, jaundice, etc.

6. Heart disease: Acute myocardial infarction, myocarditis, and heart failure can cause high levels of transaminase.

7. Certain other infectious diseases, such as pneumonia, typhoid fever, tuberculosis, infectious mononucleosis, etc., can also cause high transaminase levels.

8. Have you taken any drugs that are harmful to the liver recently? If so, be sure to pay attention to the possibility of drug-induced hepatitis;

9. Women should also pay attention to the possibility of autoimmune hepatitis and check whether the autoimmune antibodies (antinuclear antibodies, smooth muscle antibodies, etc.) are positive;

10. Whether you have had cholecystitis, heart disease, nephritis and other diseases in the past, which can also cause elevated transaminase;

11. Have you been overworked recently?

To sum up, there are many reasons for elevated transaminase levels, and careful examination is necessary to identify the cause and treat it accordingly.

A transaminase level between 0 and 40 is normal. If it is outside the normal range, the doctor will recommend another check to rule out the possibility of errors caused by factors such as laboratory equipment failure and operating errors. If the transaminase level is still high, it is most likely caused by viral hepatitis or other liver disease. However, to determine whether it is viral hepatitis, other tests are needed, combined with a comprehensive analysis of medical history, symptoms, and physical signs.

Even if it is confirmed to be viral hepatitis, the condition cannot be simply judged by the degree of ALT elevation. This is because in severe hepatitis, there may be fewer surviving liver cells and very little transaminase released into the blood, so ALT may decrease as the condition worsens.
