Is sodium hyaluronate effective in treating knee joints?

Arthritis is an extremely harmful disease that often occurs in middle-aged and elderly people. With the decline in the overall health of modern people, many young people have also suffered from arthritis, causing more and more patients to experience symptoms of mobility difficulties. Once the joints hurt, it is very painful. The knee joints are particularly seriously damaged, causing patients to gradually lose the ability to walk, while the treatment for knee arthritis is generally conventional treatment. With the development of medical technology, the method of using sodium hyaluronate to treat knee arthritis has emerged. Let’s take a look at whether sodium hyaluronate is effective in treating knee joints?

Sodium hyaluronate, also known as sodium hyaluronate, is a high molecular weight polysaccharide biomaterial formed by repeated alternation of N-acetylglucuronic acid. Sodium hyaluronate is the main component of synovial fluid and one of the components of cartilage matrix. It acts as a lubricant in the joint cavity, covers and protects the articular cartilage, improves joint contracture, inhibits cartilage degeneration and changes in the surface, improves pathological synovial fluid, and increases the slip function.

Previous methods for treating osteoarthritis can only relieve symptoms in the short term, cannot prevent the progression of the disease, and may aggravate the degeneration of articular cartilage. Experiments and clinical applications have proven that sodium hyaluronate is a safe, ideal and effective drug for the treatment of osteoarthritis. Sodium hyaluronate has many physiological functions, including participating in the regulation of electrolytes and water in the extracellular fluid, lubricating joints, resisting infection, and participating in wound healing. It plays an important role in the protection, nutrition and function of joints, mainly in the lubrication of the joint cavity, covering the barrier and buffering stress.

Under the influence of various pathogenic causes, the composition of the synovial membrane in the joint cavity changes, the sodium hyaluronate content decreases or the joint function decreases, causing corrosion and destruction of the articular cartilage, resulting in pain and movement disorders.

Supplementing exogenous sodium hyaluronate can increase the content of sodium hyaluronate in the synovium, re-form a natural barrier, and prevent further destruction and disappearance of the cartilage matrix; improve the biological function of the synovium under pathological conditions, reduce or eliminate joint friction and pain; inhibit leukocyte migration and chemotaxis, reduce synovial permeability, increase the production of high-molecular sodium hyaluronate, and reduce intra-articular exudate; cover and protect pain receptors, combine with pain mediators, and relieve pain; combine with glycoproteins to prevent the substance from participating in the inflammatory process. At the same time, sodium hyaluronate enters the cartilage matrix, forms polymers with glycoproteins, and repairs damaged cartilage. Therefore, sodium hyaluronate has a good therapeutic effect on mild to moderate osteoarthritis of the knee.
