Lung and kidney yin deficiency is a term in traditional Chinese medicine. In the formula, Rehmannia root and Ophiopogon japonicus nourish the yin of the lungs and kidneys; Cornus officinalis and Chinese yam nourish the yin of the liver and spleen; Cortex Moutan dissipates heat and eliminates steaming, while Schisandra chinensis astringes semen and stops sweating; Poria cocos and Alisma orientalis clear away heat and promote urination, and dissipate fire and dampness. This granule is a preparation of Zengye Decoction in Treatise on Febrile Diseases. The original recipe is designed to increase fluid for navigating the boat. However, it is also very suitable for those with lung and kidney yin deficiency and internal heat. In the formula, Scrophularia and Rehmannia nourish kidney yin, while Ophiopogon nourishes lung yin. The three herbs are used together to treat internal heat, restlessness, dry mouth and throat, dry cough with little sputum, hot flashes and night sweats caused by lung and kidney yin deficiency. It can be taken as a tonic medicine for colds caused by lung and kidney yin deficiency. You can also take it with a decoction of mulberry leaves and mint.

This prescription has the effects of nourishing yin, clearing away heat, reducing swelling and relieving pain. The prescription uses raw rehmannia and Scrophularia to nourish kidney yin, Ophiopogon to nourish lung and stomach yin, and white peony root to nourish liver yin; Paeonia suffruticosa to clear blood heat, Gypsum to clear qi heat, Mentha to penetrate surface heat, Gardenia to clear heart heat, Coptis chinensis to clear stomach heat; Sophora flavescens to clear throat heat, Fritillaria thunbergii to clear heat and resolve phlegm; Licorice to purge fire and detoxify. This prescription is suitable for mouth and tongue ulcers, irritability and thirst, sore throat, hoarse cough, dizziness, headache, constipation, etc. caused by yin deficiency of internal organs and internal heat and toxicity. It can be taken alone for colds caused by lung and kidney yin deficiency.
