Can baking soda cure stomach problems?

The chemical name of baking soda is sodium bicarbonate, which is a chemical with alkaline characteristics. It is widely used in our lives. It also has certain medicinal value. It is very effective in treating stomach problems. It can neutralize gastric acid in the stomach. It has a good therapeutic effect on frequent indigestion and heartburn and acid reflux. You should also follow the doctor's advice on medication.

Sodium bicarbonate is used to treat the following stomach disorders:

1. Indigestion: Symptoms include intermittent upper abdominal discomfort or pain, fullness, heartburn (acid reflux), belching, etc. They often do not want to eat or try to eat as little as possible due to discomfort such as chest tightness, early satiety, abdominal bloating, etc. They also have difficulty sleeping at night and often have nightmares after falling asleep.

2. Sodium bicarbonate tablets can relieve stomach pain, heartburn and acid reflux caused by excessive stomach acid. Acid reflux is caused by the reflux of acidic contents in the stomach. It may also be caused by excessive gastric acid secretion. It is more common in functional dyspepsia, reflux esophagitis, gastric and duodenal ulcers, and chronic gastritis.

Generally, acid reflux is more common in the elderly. This is due to poor absorption of the gastric mucosa and degeneration of gastrointestinal motility in the elderly, which should be taken seriously.

For most people, especially young people, although the symptoms of heartburn can be severe, they are often transient and rarely recur. For many elderly people, due to the decline in digestive system function, even if they are very careful, heartburn is a symptom that often accompanies them. Cold weather, slightly cold meals, and eating foods that are difficult to digest can all cause heartburn symptoms.

3. Stomach discomfort is accompanied by many symptoms, such as hiccups, bloating, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, chest tightness, etc. Since each disease manifests itself in different symptoms, if accompanied by chest tightness, heartburn, acid reflux, hiccups, etc., it may be an esophageal disease; if accompanied by pain when emptying the stomach, pain when full and hungry, hiccups with a sour taste, or even vomiting blood, etc.

4. Used for hyperacidity. It has a certain therapeutic effect on stomach pain.

Sodium bicarbonate also has the following effects:

(1) Treatment of metabolic acidosis. For the treatment of mild to moderate metabolic acidosis, oral administration is preferred. Severe metabolic acidosis should be treated with intravenous drip, such as severe kidney disease, circulatory failure, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, extracorporeal circulation, severe primary lactic acidosis, diabetic ketoacidosis, etc.

(2) Alkalinize urine. Used for the prevention of uric acid kidney stones, reducing the nephrotoxicity of sulfa drugs, and preventing hemoglobin deposition in the renal tubules in acute hemolysis.

(4) Intravenous infusion has a non-specific therapeutic effect on certain drug poisonings, such as poisoning by barbiturates, salicylates and methanol. However, this product is contraindicated for gastric lavage in case of strong acid poisoning due to ingestion, because this product reacts with strong acid to produce a large amount of carbon dioxide, which can cause acute gastric dilatation or even gastric rupture.
