How to distinguish false overbite

How to distinguish false overbite

The so-called pseudo-overbite refers to when the child is about one year old, parents find that the child has symptoms of overbite. At this time, there is no need to be too anxious, because this may be a pseudo-overbite, which will gradually improve with the growth and development of the child. Of course, if the situation has not been improved after the child is two years old, you should go to the hospital for corresponding examination in time, and consider correction of the overbite.

How to distinguish false overbite

The lower teeth are outside and the upper teeth are inside, which is commonly known as "overbite". Many new mothers have this problem. It is normal for children to have overbite before the age of two. It is not considered as overbite and does not require correction.

The normal occlusion relationship is that the upper incisors cover the lower incisors, and "underbite" means that the lower incisors are outside the upper incisors, which is called crossbite. The growth and development of children's teeth follows certain rules. Generally, the first deciduous tooth begins to erupt around 6 months after birth, and all 20 deciduous teeth have erupted by around 2 and a half years old. Before the deciduous teeth fully erupt, the baby's bite relationship is not stable and completely established, and young children are prone to the illusion of "overbite".

During infancy, the glenoid cavity of the temporomandibular joint is relatively shallow, allowing the mandible to move within a wide range of motion. Infants and young children usually have their lower canines erupt first, so babies are more accustomed to biting with their lower teeth extended forward. As the teeth erupt and the chewing function develops, the height of the temporomandibular joint socket gradually increases, and the range of motion of the mandible decreases accordingly. At around two and a half years old, when all the deciduous teeth have erupted, the occlusion relationship is gradually established and the mandibular protrusion phenomenon will gradually disappear.

Before the baby is two years old, the occlusion relationship has not been fully established, and the appearance of overbite is normal, and parents do not need to worry too much. If all the deciduous teeth have erupted after the age of three and the lower jaw is protruding, this is a bad habit and needs to be corrected in time.

How to prevent underbite

So, in life, how can we help children correct bad habits and prevent overbite? Let’s see what good solutions are available below!

First, breastfeeding mothers should pay attention to correcting improper breastfeeding posture to avoid excessive protrusion of the baby's lower jaw. A baby who is bottle-fed should not be allowed to lie flat and suck milk from the bottle by himself.

Second, help children correct bad habits. For example, babies who bite their upper jaw or protrude their lower jaw should be intervened as early as possible to help them correct bad habits.

Third, go to a professional dental department for examination as soon as possible. Once a problem is found, early correction is needed. If your deciduous front teeth do not fall out when they should, or if they fall out prematurely due to an accident, you should see a doctor promptly.

Fourth, to correct it during the baby's period, you only need to wear correctors for correction. However, if the correction is not done until adulthood, the only way to correct it is surgery.
