What is bran?

Although bran is not used much in our daily life, it plays an important role. Many people don’t know what bran is. In fact, bran generally refers to wheat bran, which is the skin of wheat. It is rich in dietary fiber, which is essential for the human body. It not only helps to improve constipation, but also prevent gastrointestinal diseases. It is also feed for mealworms and has high nutritional value. Now let’s take a look at what bran is.

Wheat bran, also known as wheat bran, is a by-product of wheat flour processing. It is wheat yellow in color and in the form of flakes or powder. There is some germ (the part where wheat sprouts) at the end of the bran, which accounts for about 5-10% of the total bran. About 1/3-1/2 of it runs into the flour. The bran is divided into 6 layers, and the outer 5 layers contain more crude fiber, less nutrition, and are difficult to digest. Oat bran contains a lot of B vitamins. It is rich in cellulose and vitamins, and its main uses are food, medicine, feed raw material, winemaking, etc.

Functional value

1. Wheat bran is rich in dietary fiber, which is an essential nutrient for the human body. It can increase the fiber content in food, improve constipation, and promote the excretion of fat and nitrogen. It has a significant role in the prevention and treatment of common clinical fiber deficiency diseases. 2. Due to the intake of high fiber content, the excretion of steroids in feces can be reduced. The main metabolic process of cholesterol in the human body is through fecal excretion, so it can lower serum cholesterol and slow down the formation of atherosclerosis. 3. It can help prevent colon and rectal cancer. 4. It can reduce the estrogen content in the blood and prevent breast cancer. 5. The B vitamins contained in wheat bran play many functions in the body and are also indispensable nutrients in the normal metabolism of food. 6. Wheat bran can be used as feed for mealworms and has high nutritional value.

Medicinal effects of oat bran: Oat bran can reduce the risk of rectal cancer. A study of patients at the New York Hospital Medical Center found that a two-ounce serving of bran per day caused early-stage rectal polyps to shrink over a six-month period. At the same time, studies have found that a diet rich in bran can lower estrogen levels in premenopausal women, thereby reducing the risk of breast cancer. Pre-menopausal women ate 3 to 4 bran muffins a day without reducing fat intake for 2 months. As a result, the incidence of breast cancer was significantly controlled. This shows that the reason why bran fiber has some effect is that it reduces the number of intestinal bacteria. The specific method of consumption is: mix 10 to 15 grams of wheat bran into milk or put it into porridge. Wheat bran is used clinically to treat colon cancer. Some patients have indeed recovered their health after taking it for 3 consecutive months.
