Why is urine pink?

The urine of healthy people is mainly colorless or yellow, and its main components are metabolic waste and toxins produced in the body. The color of urine can be abnormal, and different colors may represent different problems with the body. 1. Pink or red urine: Any urine that is visible to the naked eye as light pink cloud, meat washing water, or mixed with blood clots is collectively called gross hematuria, which means that the urine contains a large number of red blood cells. If there is no significant change in the appearance of urine, hematuria that is only visible under a microscope is called microscopic hematuria. Hematuria is often seen in renal tuberculosis, renal tumors, kidney stones, urinary tract stones, acute glomerulonephritis, pyelonephritis, cystitis, etc. When female patients collect urine for testing during menstruation, it is easy for menstrual blood in the vagina to mix into the urine, causing false "hematuria". Therefore, collecting urine for testing during menstruation is not advisable. In addition, alkaline urine from taking phenolphthalein, rhubarb and other drugs will appear red.

2. Strong tea-like or soy sauce-colored urine: mostly hemoglobinuria, commonly seen in favism, paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria, and blood transfusion reactions due to incompatible blood types.

3. Dark yellow urine: It is soybean oil color. When poured out from the container, it is easy to hang on the wall of the container and is not easy to pour out completely. There is a lot of foam after shaking. It is bilirubinuria, which is more common in jaundice hepatitis; it is also seen in the acidic urine of patients taking vitamin B12, metronidazole, and rhubarb.

4. Milky urine: Urine that is milky white like milk is called chyluria. Caused by obstruction of multiple lymphatic vessels. It is common in filariasis, but may also be caused by tuberculosis, tumors, chest and abdominal trauma due to perinephric lymphatic circulation disorders, which may cause rupture of the renal pelvis or ureter, resulting in obstruction of the lymphatic vessels and the entry of chyle into the urine.

5. White or turbid urine: When certain special vegetables and foods contain more phosphates or carbonates, especially in cold weather, the urine may appear white and turbid or have precipitation. After heating and adding acid, the turbidity and precipitation disappear and there is no big problem. However, in concentrated urine and bacteriuria, because the urine contains a large amount of inflammatory exudates such as concentrated cells or bacteria, the fresh urine becomes turbid and white cloudy. The turbidity does not disappear even if it is heated or acidified. This type of urine is often seen in urinary tract infections, pyelonephritis, cystitis, etc.
