Interesting recipe song of Nine-flavor Qianghuo Decoction

Qianghuo cinnamon powder soup is actually made by mixing nine kinds of Qianghuo soup. This kind of interaction implements Li Dongyuan's core concepts of prescriptions, such as "prescribing prescriptions based on clinical conditions", "using medicines anytime and anywhere" and "guiding the meridians and reporting to the messengers". It is also a reflection of the Yishui School's consistent advocacy of "the ancestral prescriptions are incompatible with the current diseases". Let’s learn about the professional knowledge related to Jiuwei Qianghuo Decoction.

The prescription of Qianghuo Rouguifen Decoction can also be used for patients with cold syndrome, dampness and turbidity with phlegm, kidney deficiency, spleen deficiency, etc. It is said that the Nine-flavor Qianghuo Decoction "is effective in treating miscellaneous diseases."

In "This Matter is Difficult to Know", Wang Haogu emphasized that the Nine-Ingredient Qianghuo Decoction is a "method to relieve aging and relieve diarrhea" and "if it is used in increasing or decreasing amounts, its effect is miraculous", and said "this is passed down orally and taught by heart". In addition, it is emphasized that "Nine-flavor Qianghuo Decoction is not only effective in relieving colds, but also has a magical effect in treating various diseases." "Stroke and other symptoms caused by the combination of three qi, such as arthralgia, can be used in accordance with the twelve meridians, upper, lower, internal, external, cold, hot, warm, cool, four seasons, and six qi, to supplement and purge alternately."

Since it was a method passed down orally by Master Yi, Li Dongyuan should also have been taught. However, this method does not seem to be discussed in Dongyuan’s classic works. One day, when I was reading Lanshi Mizang, I saw that the first prescription in the "Lumbar Pain" section was Qianghuo Rouguifen Tang. I noticed that the prescription was complicated and very different from Dongyuan Bu Zhong's prescriptions. After careful analysis, I suddenly realized that this prescription is a variation of the "Yi Lao Jie Li method" for treating miscellaneous diseases, and the plan described in the book is a typical example of how Jiuwei Qianghuo Decoction "is effective in treating miscellaneous diseases."

The illness in this case originated from "camping on a damp and cold island" and was caused by the invasion of cold and dampness from outside. The symptoms include "low back pain and inability to turn around", which suggests that the patient's foot-taiyang bladder meridian and foot-shaoyin kidney meridian are affected by evil; "sudden convulsions and dull pain in both flanks", which suggests that the patient's foot-shaoyang gallbladder meridian is affected by evil; the patient's medical history has been "several months", which suggests that the evil has blocked blood stasis and stagnated the meridians. The treatment is to use Jiuwei Qianghuo Decoction to expel wind, dampness, cold, and meridians.

The original formula of Nine-Ingredient Qianghuo Decoction is composed of: Qianghuo, Fangfeng, Red Peony Root, Asarum, Qianghuo, Angelica dahurica, Rehmannia glutinosa, Bupleurum, and Licorice. Shang'an Ju Rui uses Notopterygium wilfordii, Saposhnikovia divaricata, Paeonia lactiflora and Glycyrrhiza uralensis to dispel wind, eliminate dampness, dispel cold, dredge meridians and relieve pain. Qianghuo promotes blood circulation, removes blood stasis, dispels wind, dredges meridians and relieves pain. The symptom is low back pain, not headache, so there is no need for asarum and angelica dahurica, but use Duhuo and Bupleurum. From the analysis of the meridians of the drugs, Notopterygium is "the medicine for the Taiyang meridian", Saposhnikovia is "the medicine for the Taiyang meridian", Notopterygium is "the medicine for the Shaoyang meridian", Chaihu is "the medicine for the Shaoyang meridian and Jueyin meridian", and Duhuo is "the medicine for the Shaoyin kidney meridian of the foot". The combination of these medicines can eliminate the evil in the bladder meridian of foot-Taiyang, the kidney meridian of foot-Shaoyin, and the gallbladder meridian of foot-Shaoyang. There is no "Shaoyin heart heat" and "Taiyin lung heat", so there is no need for raw Rehmannia and Bupleurum. Dampness and coldness stagnate in the meridians for a long time, and long-term depression will inevitably lead to latent heat, so use Fangji to "go where the heat goes and circulate through the twelve meridians." In addition, add cinnamon powder, which is pungent, sweet and hot, to treat cold, and use stir-fried Shenqu, which is "warm in nature and sweet in taste", to "benefit the stomach qi." Because it happened to be the "winter month", it was an example of Dongyuan's "using medicine anytime and anywhere". Add peach kernel "bitter to drain stagnant blood, sweet to generate new blood", and add Notopterygium incisum to treat blood stasis and dredge the meridians. Ju Rui Fangji uses wine with Fangji to dredge the meridians. When decocting Chinese medicine, use "three cups of fine wine" because it can "mainly promote the medicinal effect" and "can flow through all the meridians" and also tightly surround the meridians.
