Solution

This prescription is used for the initial stage of febrile disease, when the Wei Qi is depressed and the lungs fail to descend. The evil is in the Wei division, the Wei Qi is depressed, and the opening and closing are disordered, so there is fever, headache, slight aversion to cold, no sweat or sweating is blocked. When damp-heat toxins invade the lungs and the lung qi becomes deficient and cannot be released, there will be cough and sore throat. When the evil heat damages the body fluids, there will be dry mouth. When the evil is in the Wei surface, there will be a red tip of the tongue, a greasy white coating, and a floating and rapid pulse. The treatment should be pungent, cool and dispersing to disperse the exterior, clear away lung heat to resolve the toxicity, and promote the descending of lung qi to restore its clarity. Peppermint and burdock seed are pungent, cool and dispersing, and can dispel wind-cold and wind-heat, and have a purgative effect; fermented black beans and schizonepeta are pungent and warm.

Slightly warm, can expel evil spirits. Although both medicines are pungent and warm to dispel exterior pathogens, they are pungent but not strong, warm but not dry. When combined with pungent and cool medicines, they can enhance the ability to penetrate the exterior and are collectively referred to as assistant medicines. Citrus stems clear the lungs and relieve cough; bamboo leaves clear heat from the upper part of the body; reed roots clear heat, detoxify, promote salivation and quench thirst, and are all adjuvant drugs. Licorice is used as a blending agent to harmonize various medicines. The characteristics of its combination are, firstly, a small amount of pungent and warm products are added to the pungent and cool, which is beneficial to expel evil without violating the meaning of pungent and cool; secondly, it is compatible with dispersing wind, cold and heat and clearing away heat and removing fire, which can disperse wind, cold and heat, remove toxins and filth, thus forming a clearing and dispersing agent with dispersing as the main effect. It is a "spicy, cool and neutral agent".
