What material is good for dental piles?

What material is good for dental piles?

Some people have serious tooth defects or only the tooth roots are left due to trauma, and they cannot be repaired directly. At this time, the doctor will drive a tooth post into the alveolar bone when repairing their teeth. Some people's teeth are deformed and are not suitable for repair using the direct molar retention method. In this case, doctors often recommend patients to use dental piles. There are many kinds of materials for dental piles. Which one is better?

1. What is a “pile”?

1. What is a pile?

The post is the part inserted into the root canal, which uses friction, adhesion and bonding forces to achieve retention, thereby providing retention for the final restoration.

2. What is the function?

The main function is retention, followed by stress transfer and changing the stress distribution of the tooth root.

3. Pile length

The length of the post is greater than 1/2 of the length of the root supported by the alveolar bone, that is, the length of the intrabone post is greater than 1/2 of the length of the intrabone root. In this way, the end of the post will not be too close to the alveolar ridge, greatly reducing root fracture.

4. Pile diameter

Generally speaking, if the strength of the post material is sufficient and the diameter of the post is within the range of 1/4 to 1/3 of the root diameter, it will have no significant effect on the fracture resistance of the tooth root.

2. What kind of tooth condition requires piling?

1. Those with large-area tooth crown defects due to caries (cavities), trauma, etc.;

2. The tooth is missing and only the root is left. The root can still reach under the gums using the residual root (no crown), the periodontal health is good, the root is long enough, and the root surface can be exposed through gingivectomy;

3. Those with misaligned or twisted teeth who are unable to undergo orthodontic treatment or are not suitable for orthodontic treatment;

4. Those with deformed teeth and poor retention of direct molars.

3. What materials are best for dental pile driving?

There are many materials used for dental posting, the most commonly used ones are fiber posts and metal posts. The materials of metal piles are divided into stainless steel, gold-palladium alloy, gold-platinum alloy, etc.

If it is anterior teeth, then fiber posts can be used. It is corrosion-resistant, does not contain metal, does not affect medical examinations, is not prone to root fractures, has good aesthetic properties, and can be used in conjunction with all-ceramic teeth. If it is the back teeth, metal post can be used. Because it is located at the back teeth, the aesthetic requirements do not need to be particularly high, and metal post will not cause root fracture and is corrosion-resistant.

4. Precautions for piling

1. It is generally recommended that patients observe for a period of time after treatment, and then have piles or crowns placed if there is no discomfort.

2. Teeth that have been treated are generally more brittle, so metal posts are not recommended. Fiber posts can be selected to reduce the chance of root cracks.

3. If your teeth have been injured, be sure to tell the doctor about the situation during treatment so that the doctor can understand the overall condition of the teeth.
